How I Use ChatGPT 🤖 for Lesson Planning 📝⌛ and Delivery

Feb 05, 2024

As educators, we're always on the lookout for tools and techniques that can enhance our teaching methods and improve student engagement. In my quest for innovation, I've integrated ChatGPT into my lesson planning process, and the results have been nothing short of transformational. Today, I want to share how this powerful AI tool has transformed the way I create materials and how it complements the use of other applications like BookWidgets, Wordwall and Google Classroom in tracking progress and automating assessment.

Before I go through the process, take a look at a typical lesson that I have created in one of my non-specialist teaching subjects (Geography) this year by clicking on the link or image below…

Simplifying Content Creation with ChatGPT

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is an advanced AI model capable of understanding and generating human-like text based on the input it receives. For lesson planning, this means I can quickly generate educational content, including lesson notes, quizzes, and interactive activities. The process is simple yet incredibly effective. Below is an example of the ChatGPT prompt I have been using most recently…

ChatGPT Prompt

Step 1: Write a passage appropriate for 12 year old geography students based at Kempston Academy in Bedford based on the attached pdf. Make the passage sound exciting and from the perspective of an archaeologist setting up a dangerous expedition.

Step 2: Shorten the passage just written to 3 succinct bullet point lesson objectives.

Step 3: Now add 8 True or False Questions (and include answers) to check understanding.

Step 4: Also add 3 multiple choice questions and include answers.

Step 5: Write several one sentence definitions of each of the key terms suitable for a 12 year old student.

Step 6: Now create 3 differing or opposing views on the topic to be discussed by the students

Step 7: Can you write a 4 verse rap about this topic (exclude choruses) for the students to enjoy?

Step 8: Add 5 famous quotes in relation to this topic also.

Step 9: Write 3 fact or fake research questions you can ask a 12 year old to research for fun about archaeology (and also include answers)

Step 10: Write 5 Dad jokes in relation to this topic.

Step 11: Select all the keywords that you have just produced and add it to a list separated by a line. Add ##1 straight after each word.

Integrating my ChatGPT output with BookWidgets, WordWall and Google Classroom for enhanced learning experiences

Once I have the materials ready, I import them into BookWidgets, a platform that allows educators to create interactive lessons and track student progress. This integration has significantly improved the learning experience. Check out the array of options available to you for converting paper based resources into digital ones in just a few clicks (below)

BookWidgets allows you to do…

1. Live Tracking of Progress: BookWidgets enables me to monitor how students are engaging with the materials in real-time. I can see which parts of the lesson capture their interest the most and where they might be struggling.

2. Self-Marked Assessments: The quizzes and tests I import from ChatGPT-generated materials into BookWidgets are automatically graded. This not only saves me a tremendous amount of time but also provides instant feedback to students, which is crucial for their learning process. All results can be imported into Google Classroom seamlessly.

3. Customisable and Flexible: Any last-minute changes or updates to the lesson materials can be easily made in BookWidgets, ensuring that the content remains up-to-date and relevant. This flexibility is a game-changer for adapting to the dynamic nature of classroom learning. I can even add in snippets of dynamic content from other applications like a Google Form Quiz or my new favourite, Wordwall.net…

Benefits benefits benefits!

The combination of ChatGPT and BookWidgets has been a game-changer. Here are a few key benefits:

- Enhanced Content Quality: With ChatGPT, I can ensure that the materials are not only accurate but also engaging and tailored to meet the educational standards of various subjects.

- Time Savings: The automation of content creation and grading frees up valuable time that can be spent on interacting with students, planning more creative lessons, or simply taking a well-deserved break.

- Increased Engagement: The interactive nature of the materials and the ability to track progress live makes the learning experience more dynamic and personalised, leading to better student engagement and understanding.

Conclusion

Integrating ChatGPT with BookWidgets has transformed my lesson planning and delivery, making it more efficient, engaging, and effective. The benefits of this process, especially for non-specialist teachers, are immense, ranging from time savings to enhanced content quality.

By leveraging these tools, we can create a more interactive and personalised learning experience that not only makes our job easier but also significantly improves student outcomes. If you're looking for ways to innovate your teaching methods, I highly recommend giving this approach a try.

Kind regards,

Georg
