Tomorrow morning, Bear will have a CBC (Complete Blood Count) to check his blood levels. This test is important because it tells us if Bear is healthy enough for chemo. If all his numbers are within normal limits, he’ll be cleared for chemo #3 of 5.
Bear, as always, is taking this in stride. He’s the kind of dog who greets every vet visit with calm curiosity (and the occasional wag of a tail) rather than worry. It’s a comfort knowing he’s easygoing—though I still make sure to follow every precaution to keep him safe and comfy.
Why CBCs matter:
A CBC measures things like red and white blood cells and platelets. Chemo can lower these counts, which may make dogs more prone to infections, anemia, or bleeding. Checking Bear’s levels helps his vet adjust treatment safely and keep him as healthy as possible.
Our pre-chemo routine:
The night before:
✅️ 2 Ondansetron pills to prevent nausea and vomiting.
✅️ A nice, nutritious meal (Bear’s favorite—he always perks up for dinner!).
✅️ A good night’s rest.
Morning of chemo:
✅️ A nutritious breakfast.
✅️ 2 Ondansetron pills.
✅️ 1.5 Metronidazole pills (since the chemo dose may be slightly increased, this helps prevent loose stool or diarrhea).
This routine helps Bear feel as comfortable as possible and reduces the chance of tummy upset or other side effects.
Tips for Other Pet Parents:
1- Know your dog’s routine: Small adjustments like timing of meals or meds can make chemo days much easier.
2- Pre-medicate if recommended: Anti-nausea or digestive medications can reduce side effects.
3- Keep meals light and nutritious: A healthy meal before treatment helps dogs handle chemo better.
4- Rest is crucial: A calm environment and good sleep can make a big difference in comfort.
5- Stay informed and ask questions: Understanding lab tests like CBCs and why they matter helps you support your pet safely.
6- Celebrate the small victories: Even a wagging tail or a calm demeanor is a win on chemo days!
