How to Prepare for exams

  • Study with a friend. Unity is strength, even when it comes to studying. Exchanging ideas and combining knowledge is an invaluable resource. Just make sure they don't distract each other or spend all their time talking about irrelevant things!

    • By doing this, you will put the information orally, and it will be fun and easy to remember. When you have to explain something to a friend, your brain has to wrap the subject, rather than just picking up the information in the hope of retaining it. Both of you should make flashcards and study guides to cover all the content.

Use mnemonic tricks. Some things like mnemonic devices can really help you save information that you might not otherwise retain. Surely you know the rhyme "thirty days brings November, with April, June and September." Why do they work? Because they are effective mnemonic devices that stick in your mind!

    • Associations work too. If you are trying to remember that India used to be a British colony, imagine the queen circling the Taj Mahal. At the time of the exam, you may not remember what you really need to remember, but you will remember enough to jog your memory!

Study in the right places. First things first: you need a quiet place to study. Make sure you have a sweater in case it gets cold, a comfortable chair, some dark chocolate (to power your brain!), a bottle of water, and whatever else you might need. That way, you will have fewer interruptions.

  • Some research also indicates that you should study in more than one place . It sounds a little weird, but the brain makes associations with the environment. So the more associations there are, the more likely you are to retain the information. Find all the comfortable chairs and study by sitting in all of them!

Avoid studying everything at the last minute. Although sometimes unavoidable, studying at the last minute is not the right way to go. In fact, taking breaks is good for your brain and will help you retain more information. Try to study in 20- to 50-minute intervals, resting five to ten minutes between each.

  • If you know the date of the exam in advance, it is best that you study a full week. If you do several sessions, you will insert the knowledge in your mind and at the end you will be able to realize how well you know the contents, with which you will relax and have security.

Just relax. Easier said than done? Remember that you already have all the answers in your mind! The only challenge is getting them out! Your first instinct is almost always correct, so don't go back and change the answers. If you're really not sure, go to the next question and come back later.

  • Always read the test questions. If you just take a look at them, you might understand the opposite of what you have to do.

  • If you are unsure about the wording of a test question, ask the teacher what it means. As long as you don't completely ask him the answer, but only what he meant by the question, he will usually answer you.

Enjoy a good night's rest. You have to sleep to stay focused because otherwise it will be very difficult not to be distracted and you may forget what you just learned. This is one more reason why overdoing it is so bad!

  • The dream is wonderful. Lack of sleep can lead to accidents, lowers your intellectual level, and can actually cause health problems. If you have to choose between studying late and sleeping, choose to sleep.
