You might have noticed that sometimes, the astrological insights we share here at Casa da Lua, especially about the New and Full Moons, might differ from what you see in general Western astrology guides. For example, our recent Full Moon was in Scorpio, while other sources might have said Sagittarius.
This isn't a mistake, but rather a beautiful distinction in how we look at the cosmic tapestry! Let's clear up this little cosmic riddle:
The two ways of mapping the Stars
Think of the night sky as a grand, eternal clock. Both types of astrology divide this clock into 12 signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc.), but they set their "starting point" for those signs in slightly different ways:
Western Astrology (The "Seasonal" Map):
This is what most of us are familiar with. It's based on the Earth's seasons.
Its starting point: 0 degrees Aries is always set at the Vernal Equinox (the first day of spring, around March 20th). So, it's like a clock that resets with the seasons every year.
Why it moves: Because of a slow, natural wobble in Earth's axis (called "precession"), the spring equinox point slowly shifts over thousands of years against the backdrop of the actual stars. This means its "Aries" today isn't truly aligned with the constellation of Aries anymore.
Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) & The Sidereal Map (Our way!):
This is the ancient system we honor at Casa da Lua. It's based on the actual, fixed positions of the constellations and stars in the sky. "Sidereal" simply means "of the stars."
Its starting point: Our 0 degrees Aries is fixed to a specific point among the constellations, aligning with the actual star field. It's like a clock that's permanently attached to the actual star patterns you see in the night sky.
Why we use it: For Vedic astrology, the direct connection to the visible stars and constellations is key. It helps us understand the deeper, more subtle energies and precise timings that guide our spiritual path and life rhythms. This system also works beautifully with the Nakshatras (lunar mansions), which are directly linked to specific stars.
The current difference: About 24 degrees
Because of Earth's wobble over many centuries, there's now about a 24-degree difference between these two maps. So, when Western astrology says a planet is in, say, 10 degrees of Taurus, our Vedic system might see it in 16 degrees of Aries. This is why our Full Moon in Scorpio was seen as Sagittarius in the Western system for the same event!
