The adventures of Epping forest

The adventures of Epping forest

Nov 01, 2020

As a young girl I always loved the idea that fairies existed and lived in our gardens. I remember sitting in Exclusive books scrolling through books of pressed fairies and seeing how they would make their clothes out of items lying around like acorns for hats and their houses being built out of little twigs and leaves. They inspired the imagination in a little girls mind.

Yesterday I was taken back to my childhood fantasy, I spent the day exploring Epping forest. The trails are particularly beautiful at the moment with the autumn colours exploding everywhere. 🍁

*

The ground is littered with leaves of every fiery shade of yellow, red and orange you could imagine but tread lightly... if you aren’t careful you will look back and realise you left a trail of carnage behind you 🍄 you are the giant in the fairy world and just created their natural disaster.

Being able to identify these little mushroom homes is not necessarily an easy task. The colours make them go into stealth mode amongst the thick layer of leaves but once you notice one. You see them all - like a veil has been lifted up to reveal this magical world

With purple ones that you could swear are glowing to pink ones that that come out of the adventures of Tintin. You’ll then notice among the large ones, the tiny babies trying desperately to push through the dense canopy of leaves. Suddenly you notice the angel rays coming through the trees pouring golden light, making everything come alive.

Epping forest is 30 min by car from London or 1 hour by tube so it is so easily accessible for a day outing in nature. A word of warning, be sure to log your cars location on Google maps, the more you start enjoying the forest, the more you lose track of your time and location within the forest.

*no fairies were harmed during the making of this post.*
