CANCELLIERI: Descrizione delle Cappelle Pontificie e Cardinalizie di tutto l'anno

Sep 02, 2026

Alongside Moroni's "History of the Papal Chapels" (a French, expanded, supplemented, and annotated edition of the dictionary entry "The Cappelle Pontificie, Cardinalizie e Prelatizie" from the famous "Dizionario di erudizione storico-ecclesiastica"), this work by his master, Francesco Cancellieri, is the only comprehensive commentary on papal liturgies celebrated throughout the liturgical year (including "extraordinary" celebrations, such as conclaves, coronations, and canonizations).

Moroni's work was written several decades later than "Descrizione delle Cappelle Pontificie e Cardinalizie di tutto l'anno" is much more readily available, even on the secondary market, and is less significant for collectors.

Thanks in part to the support of those who decided to buy us coffee, we managed to acquire a copy of Cancellieri's publication in excellent condition and with exceptional provenance (we assure you, it wasn't cheap, but it comes up so rarely, especially in good condition, that we bought this one right away, without any negotiations). It most likely adorned the library of the Fabri (Fabbri) family from Ravenna, as indicated by the coat of arms on the decorative binding.

This is also one of the rarest and most valuable publications on Francesco Cancellieri's papal ceremonial. It is worth noting that it contains three additional treatises! The first is about secret and public consistories (cardinal creations); the second is about the Solemn Papal Mass and Holy Week in the Vatican; and the third is about the palace halls and papal chapels in the Apostolic Palace.

We believe that no electronic device can replace real books, especially those that constitute the historical heritage of our culture.
