Dunboyne edge six goal thriller in League opener

Dunboyne…3-10

Trim…3-08

At times during this A League Div. 1 opening round encounter it appeared Dunboyne were going to coast to victory but in the end, depending on which lenses one was looking through, sloppiness from them or inventive attacking play from their visitors left the result in doubt right until Padraic Coyle’s long whistle.

Cathal Lacey’s early season form has been a particular boon for Ger Robinson’s side and when the corner forward netted again and half forward Lorcan Conway also netted before the break, leaving them clear by 2-06 to 0-04, it looked like case closed.

However, Ciaran Giblin’s team did eventually find a way past Cian Flynn in the Dunboyne goal, thus leaving five between the sides at the break. Furthermore, when Trim substitute Ian Byrne rattled the locals’ net very shortly after coming on it threw matters right back in the melting pot.

To their credit though, Dunboyne again asserted and when Michael Murphy’s goal put them four clear once more that appeared to be that but yet still Trim netted, meaning the leaders had to engage in some frantic but disciplined defending to close out the job.
