This artwork represents a reflection of my emotions during my time in Taiwan and serves as an expression of my deep reflections on a patriarchal society. The male figure in the painting, with his slightly furrowed brows, reflects the inner struggle and helplessness I felt at that time. In Taiwanese society, gender roles were sharply defined: men were expected to bear heavy responsibilities, be brave adventurers, and seize opportunities, while women were expected to follow an invisible set of rules, confined to predefined roles.
The pressure from patriarchy made me feel like I couldn’t express myself freely. I was constantly told what I should do and how I should act. As a woman, I often felt boxed in—whether at home or in the workplace. These invisible norms acted like a wall, preventing me from breaking free and chasing my dreams. The slight furrow of the brows in this painting symbolizes my resistance and confusion toward these restrictions.
I once fantasized about being a man, thinking perhaps I could break free from these constraints and gain more respect, more opportunities, to do what I wanted to do. But behind this thought was actually a rebellion against the patriarchal society. I could no longer live within these boundaries. I wanted to break free from these predefined expectations and find my own path.
This artwork is not only a reflection of my past emotions, but also a reflection on the limitations imposed by a patriarchal society. I hope to break these frameworks, and no matter the gender, be free to pursue my dreams and have equal opportunities and respect.
