Game Concept: Silly Little Letters

Game Concept: Silly Little Letters

Jun 27, 2022

Heyo creatives!

As one of my supporters and/or members, you're all getting this email about a week earlier than everyone else is. I want to try posting either weekly or bi-weekly with mini-updates. Still working on my posting schedule...in the meantime, here's me working out a game idea I had this month!

[Image Description: An animated illustration of a game menu done in a pixel art style. The background of the drawing is a piece of lined writing paper. At the top of the drawing the title, silly little letters, is in lowercase letters. The words "silly" and "letters" are colored red, and the word "little" is blue.

On top of the title are two envelopes with legs. The rectangular envelope only has legs, while the square envelope has legs and arms. Both letters are red and white, with hearts in the center.

There are four buttons on the bottom, all with red outlines, black text, and a white fill. In order from left to right; the back button has an arrow pointing to the left, the skip button has a curved arrow pointed down, the next button has an arrow pointing right, and the last button is square-shaped with three red horizontal lines in a row. END ID]

After diving headfirst into game development in June 2021, I realized that I was on my way to becoming burnt out. To avoid that, I took a few months to gather myself and rest.

I probably should have been cleaning up and organizing my portfolio during that time.

I wasn't.

While I now work on my portfolio, I've decided to start a little side-project this month; creating a silly little game on my silly little 'puter, called Silly Little Letters. (spoiler alert: I've run outta steam with this concept, so it's going on the "partially started, but paused projects" shelf!)

[Game Scene Concept: Letters on paper background, on a desk]

It was originally called "Queer Letters" then "Silly Queer Letters", but for the experiences that I want to write about; I'm not ready for that level of vulnerability. Almost. But not yet.

I'm getting back into the swing of game dev by giving myself space to see how far I get with a casual month-long project, joining a few game jams, and hanging out at my local indie game dev meetups.

So far in Silly Little Letters, you'd play as an envelope named...Evo, Elo, Envi...it's a work in progress. As a sentient letter, you're probably going to travel through a paper-like world, chat with other envelopes, and round up some wild letters. This is to be a very casual type of game, so the goal is to have fun with it.

Thanks for reading, and I'll let you know if this idea goes any further!
