1-Year anniversary of sketching my first game, Bubble Bumble!

Jun 15, 2022

In May 2021, I was finishing an internship and somehow became fascinated with how video games were made.

I can't remember the exact moment when I thought that learning how to make video games sounded like fun, but I know that it started with asking myself a curious question: "Can I make a video game?"

I proceeded to fall down a rabbit hole of videos from GDC, searching how [insert game title] was made, learning what game engines are, watching devlogs after devlogs, and doing Unity tutorials.

I started to follow tutorials as they remade classic games like snake, created simple platformers, and learned pixel art to push myself further into something new. I think I called myself a Game Developer pretty quickly.

If I'm doing it, then I'm taking the title that comes with it!

On June 12th, 2021, I sketched the first concept art of my first video game, Bubble Bumble! I was sitting by myself at a party (introverts unite!) with my sketchbook, doodling away. By that point, I knew that any game I made needed to be kept simple and the scope small, so a bee stuck in a bubble was perfect for me.

Now a year later, I have four published games! I made three of them myself; creating the art, animation, level design, programming, and writing. The fourth game was made during a team game jam, and all of these games are playable on my itch.io page.

The only thing I don't do is music and sound effects. However, I did make the sound effects in Bubble Bumble using a free audio program called Audacity and the voice recorder on my phone. For the music, I usually find it on itch io.

I don't have a game development degree (mine's in fashion design), but I took a free 3-month programming boot camp in 2020. That was enough for me to become familiar with coding languages, so learning C# for Unity wasn't too difficult. Combined with my creative spirit and drive to try and complete something new, as they say;

The rest isn't history; it has become my future.

Mmm...I wrote a lot more than I thought. Well, I guess that's what happens when you don't post for months. Thanks for reading and playing my games, and I'll catch you creatives later!

Since I'm a hot mess and days late, this post is public. But, this will not be the norm as I get a schedule together. Thanks for understanding <3.
