TF2 wip: next video, sorting many demos, guide maintenance

Mar 04, 2024

Posted on 2024-01-16 (buymeacoffee recently made change when you edit post, it shows that date of edit instead of original publish date, so i do this manually now. i sent feature request for original AND edit date to be shown, some post dates maybe confusing before this post because i make them public or make an edit)

next video + sorting

did some variety sorting, eventually ended up thinking more about my huntsman folder, hasn't been general (non-cliff) huntsman video since one life huntsman. maybe it's time to attack the folder, many demos to sort, get a better idea of what to include and have tighter chronological grouping. my most hefty folder yet and along with other finicky stuff below, likely longer wait for video that usual. should make future huntsman video easier with this groundwork.

the huntsman viewmodel

thinking about using more accurate huntsman viewmodel mod so it matches the world viewmodel (2 gloves firstperson vs 1 glove on left hand thirdperson/world). huntsman was originally on left side, now it's mirrored, so old mods that fixed it will have huntsman have glove+watch on wrong hand but found a mod that has correct orientation (probably something about mirroring the mirror, more research needed), thinking about combining with another fix mod which affects sniper viewmodels that i like look of. will have to look up tutorials how to decompile and use blender to do this.

huntsman viewmodel fix mods to possibly combine, first one has better color and viewmodels for jarate/melee, second has working left glove on huntsman (default firstperson huntman viewmodel is gloves on both hands, no watch). probably something to do with negative x scale on huntsman animation to counter the negative scale to flip the originally left side huntsman, since i assume the hand + altered hand + added watch geometry must be kept same across all animations. or maybe the glove and watch can move. have to learn more to get less confused. would like to fix some of that clipping that happens when drawing the string where it clips through the pulleys (metal ring at top), also occurs with huntsman where the string just bends wrong around the same location, but maybe too complicated for now and not as noticeable as the glove+watch. if i don't figure it out, might give up and use mod in second picture and try to reuse/recolor texture to look like first screenshot.

this should've be fixed by valve's TF Team in the first place, along with many other things, can only assume they are extremely short-staffed (compared to DotA2 and CS:GO staff), have that seemingly never-ending bot infection to deal with and/or poor management (compared to DotA2 and CS:GO fix frequency). supply and demand? i don't know, and i don't know about valve's internal. my main concerns for the game are hitscan sniper rifles and demo compatibility, rarely need to deal with bots in casual. if bots somehow become more problem for me, i still have my demos and other interests to make video, though i may miss playing in live random crit-free game.

guide maintenance

Touching up my TF2 steam guides, especially the demo recording one - I tried installing the pre-smissmas TF2 beta installation to make sure whether or not I could get the ragdolls working properly with their cosmetics for the demos. Seems to work so far (tried before but it crashed), maybe no or at least less of turning players into default skin for older demos. More info in the guide if you have demo ragdoll problem.

My TF2 steam guides:

Polícia da Penhasco player medic ragdoll could've looked different if i used proper demo version (video screenshot below). would have cosmetics. also, (huntsman headshot) ragdolls seem to have 50/50 chance to alter animation (immediate ragdoll or headshot animation then ragdoll). but most thing that matters i made video, but i like these details for production quality and immersion of being in real game.
