“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Reflection:
Genesis 1:1 isn’t just the start of a book; it’s the start of everything. As we begin, we will approach this verse and all others as true and factual. It declares that in the beginning, God created, which means that God already existed before our universe began. In Exodus 3:14, God says, “I am who I am,” showing that He exists outside of creation and outside of time itself. For God to create time, He must exist beyond it. He is not bound by the limitations of what He made. The word “created” in this verse is purposeful. It tells us the universe didn’t happen by chance but was designed with intention. The phrase “the heavens and the earth” refers not only to everything we see like space, the planets, and our world but also to the spiritual realm in which God dwells. Though God can enter our world, He still exists beyond space and time. We live in a world that often feels random and unanchored, but Genesis opens by assuring us that there is order, purpose, and Someone at the center of it all, and that Someone is God.
