The evening before his first day of middle school, Raju’s adventurous spirit led him onto a rocky trail. His mountain bike, his prized possession and his ride to school, hit a hidden stone with a sickening CRUNCH. The front derailleur, the mechanism that changed gears, was bent into a twisted metal claw, utterly useless.
Panic set in. "How will I get to school? My parents can't drive me! This is a disaster!" he muttered, his voice thick with the dread of a ruined start.
That’s when a cheerful whistle cut through the worry. It was Prof. Rancho, his backpack bulging with its usual oddities. "Trouble, young explorer?" he asked, his eyes already twinkling with diagnosis.
Raju explained, his words tumbling out in a frustrated rush. Rancho simply smiled.

He emptied his backpack onto the driveway: a few zip ties, a length of wire, an old spring from a pen, and a small multi-tool.

With playful focus, Rancho got to work. He used the spring and a zip tie to create a tension arm. He carefully bent the mangled derailleur into a fixed, single position—perfect for the middle gear. "This is now a 'get-to-school' gear. Not for mountains, but for mornings!" he declared.
But Rancho wasn't done. From his pocket, he pulled out a handful of colorful plastic cable ends. "For the finishing touch," he winked, attaching them to the spokes of Raju’s front wheel.
The next morning, as Raju pedaled nervously into the schoolyard, his bike didn't just work—it whirred with a brilliant, clicking rainbow of color. The cable ends tapped rhythmically against the spokes, creating a cheerful, propeller-like sound that turned heads. Instead of a broken bike, he arrived on a makeshift marvel. His friends crowded around, not to pity him, but to ask, "Whoa, Raju! How’d you do that?"
In that moment, Raju’s dread transformed into pride. He hadn't just gotten a fix; he’d gotten a story and a lesson in ingenuity. He stood a little taller, ready to tackle his new school.
Prof. Rancho, watching from the gate, simply gave a thumbs-up and a knowing smile.
All is well.
