【Part 1】The Day I Mistook Someone’s House for a Garbage Bin

Jul 08, 2025

🛬 My first day in Canada turned into a comedy I’ll never forget.
Here's how I accidentally tried to throw garbage into someone’s actual home. 😂

👋 Hi everyone, it's YUKO

✈️ My Canadian Debut: Lost in the Rockies

I was born and raised in the big city of Tokyo.
Canada was actually my first time traveling abroad! I didn’t have much money, so I found a cheap flight to Calgary via LA.

📍 I landed at Calgary International Airport with zero plans.
I had no idea where to go. But I’d heard a rumor:

“If you go to Banff in the Canadian Rockies, there are always jobs for Japanese people.”

So I hopped on a bus, heading straight for the mountains.

🌄 That day, I probably saw more mountains in a single hour than I had in my entire life! I was stunned—just mountain after mountain.

🎉 The Party… and the Snowy Cleanup

I soon found a job and moved into staff housing. The staff threw me a wild welcome party—music, drinks, dancing… it was a blast!

The next morning, everyone went off to work, leaving behind a mountain of trash.
It was May, and yet ❄️ snow was falling. I was too scared to go outside, so I stayed in and decided to clean up.

🗑️ I filled two big garbage bags and thought,

“Okay… but where do I throw these out?”

🧠 My First Big Mistake

With my very limited English, I asked a staff member,

“Garbage… where?”

They answered in super fast English. I only caught a few words:

“Green… big… behind the house.”

“Got it!” I thought. “Green and big. Easy!”
So I went around to the back of the house…

…but couldn’t find a big green garbage bin anywhere.

Instead, my eyes kept getting drawn to something else:

🏡 A small building with a green roof.

And that’s when it hit me.

“OMG. Canadians are HUGE… of course their garbage bins are huge too!!”

Yes, friends, I mistook a real house for a garbage bin.

💭 The Imagination Spiral

Looking closer, I saw windows… even curtains!

Did I realize it was someone’s home?

Nope. I thought:

“WOW! They even have a manager for the garbage bins!
This must be to protect the trash from bears or raccoons! How cool!”

With a big smile, I knocked on the door and handed over the two garbage bags.
Yes. Seriously.

😱 The Resident’s Face… and Mine

The “manager” (aka the poor homeowner) looked horrified.
They spoke fast, but I caught the one phrase that mattered:

“GO AWAY!”

🏃 I ran back to the staff housing, clutching my garbage, my pride in shambles.

🔁 What Happens Next?

Did I give up? Nope.

Did I come up with even weirder ideas? You bet I did. 😅
And it gets much worse before it gets better.

In the next post, I’ll tell you what happened when I tried again… and what I found out about “the real garbage bin.”
