Poem Draft: Explaining My Fatigue to Myself

Jul 29, 2023

Hello!! Dr. Worm with a special saturday update! As I mentioned in my last catch-up post, I've been doing more poetry work as of late. I've decided that as a special treat, I'll post some of my early drafts up here on BMAC before bringing them over to my poetry blog all polished and finished up. I always love seeing the earliest versions of a project, the original germs of ideas before they fully coherent finished pieces. I love seeing what gets abandoned and what gets built on and what gets transformed into something totally new. And so I present an early draft of a new poem called Explaining My Fatigue To Myself.

hope you like it,

Barry AKA Dr. Worm

half awake my writsts and ankles are held down as a nurse calmly makes small incisions across my calves and thighs along my biceps in the palm of my hand and gently slides in stone after stone slowly but surely weighed down gentle but I feel the strain against my fragile skin when i try to move threatening to tear open my fingers and toes twitch i take deep breaths and use all my strength and my brain and heart are begging me to move  just shift an inch over do anything but the glittering stones now drowning in blood hidden within me say otherwise minutes hours days at a time i lie still a twitch of the thumb as i use my walking talking working creating making lunch clean the downstairs bathroom pet the cat wash my hair energy to try and stretch out my stone legs and maybe turn from the window where the sun shines bright in my tired eyes
