Another very hot day here in Waco, but here in my heatproof bunker at Mission Control I am waiting it out. Cooler weather will be coming in ... oh mercy, I don't want to think about how long.
But I'm good — just need to get the long walks done in the morning and then settle down to a day of listenin' & readin' & writin' — and pretty soon a summer of such reflection will be replaced by a fall of teachin'. But this will be my last semester in a teaching career that began in 1982; starting in 2027 the image you see above will be my full-time post. How I will deal with not teaching any more ... well, it remains to be seen.
What did I do this summer at Mission Control?
Finished the edits on my forthcoming biography of Dorothy L. Sayers
Wrote a proposal, and then consequently signed a contract, for my next book, Tom and Wystan
Wrote a review for The Hedgehog Review of Ian Marcus Corbin's new book
Wrote, also for The Hedgehog Review, a "Letter from Waco"
Wrote an essay for Salmagundi called "Ezra Pound and the Decay of Conservatism"
Wrote, for National Affairs, an essay on AI and personal formation called "Unsurrendering"
Continued to add material to Cosmos Malick
Did my weekly newsletter
