Hey, I can now read and type without my eyes pinwheeling! The vertigo that afflicted me for around a month (!) has significantly diminished, though I'm sorry to say that it hasn't departed altogether: if I move my head too quickly, or bend down to tie shoes ...
But I am feeling much better.
And not being able to read or write had its consolations: I spent a lot of time with Ella, about whom I will have more to say later.

For now I'll just mention something that Ira Gershwin said late in his life: that he knew he and his brother George had written some pretty good songs, but he didn't know how good until he heard Ella sing them. Hard to imagine a higher compliment — or one more richly deserved. I've been going through Ella's "Songbooks": Cole Porter, Gershwin, Rodger & Hart, Ellington. What an astonishing body of work. And knowing I couldn't read or write helped me really to listen.
More on all this later.
Thanks to those of you who send consoling or encouraging thoughts, either in comments on this site or via email. I have not been able to answer them all individually, but I have certainly read them, and learned from them what people value in my online writing. This provides invaluable guidance for the future. For now, I'll be on micro.blog exclusively, but gradually I'll work my way back to longer blogposts at The Homebound Symphony.
Again: thanks for the support, in all the forms support takes.
