The Compass Within...

Rediscovering myself beyond memories & shadows...

image

Dear Readers,

There are nights when the mind refuses to settle, when memories rise like tidewaters, some gentle and soothing, some sharp as shards of glass. Yesterday was one of those nights. I had replied to a friend’s post, words spilling from the edges of my heart, tracing memories both luminous and painful. Some memories made me smile, soft and tender. Some memories gnawed at the edges of my soul, reminders of broken promises, of paths I wished I hadn’t walked. And some, the darkest, threatened to pull me down entirely, as if the past wanted to claim me again.

I pressed send. And then, silence.

Until a message came.

“Jacob, I can feel your words, too. Unlock yourself❣️ Not your memories define you, but you, you can define your future. Find yourself.”

The words landed like a breeze in a quiet room, startling in their warmth. I didn’t know this person. Perhaps I never would. And yet, in that instant, I felt seen, not the face the world knows, not the polite shell I wear, but the pulse beneath, the fragment of truth I rarely allow to surface.

I typed back the only thing I could. “Sometimes I’m lost. Sometimes I’m broken.”

And then, almost like a whisper threading into the stillness of my room, another message arrived:

“Refine your inner compass. It is not broken. It is maybe yours to rediscover.”

The words lingered, dancing between certainty and mystery. I sat with them, feeling a quiet shift. My compass, my own inner sense of direction, hadn’t been shattered, only buried beneath the rubble of doubt, fear, and the weight of old pain. Perhaps it had been waiting for a voice like this, a gentle guide from an unexpected place, to remind me it was still there, still mine.

I realised then that the exchange was more than just an interaction. It was an echo of something I had almost forgotten: that within the fragile, broken, wandering parts of me, there existed the power to heal, to define, to become. Memories, with all their weight, are not chains; they are lessons, shadows that can shape but not imprison. The future is still a blank page. And the ink, always, is mine to hold.

I closed my eyes and listened to the quiet rhythm of my own heartbeat, the compass within stirring. Perhaps that is the gift of certain strangers, certain voices: they remind you that you are not lost, only rediscovering. And maybe, just maybe, the first step in finding yourself again is to let the words settle, to feel them, and then to act, not in fear, not in haste, but with quiet courage.

I think of sending a message back. I think of writing a post. I think of capturing this moment in words that can live beyond my own eyes. But more than anything, I feel compelled to sit with it, to honour it, and to allow myself to be found in the quiet.

There is a compass inside me. It was never broken. I only needed to see it again.

And perhaps this is the story I was meant to tell, not for anyone else, not yet, but for the part of me that sometimes forgets, that sometimes falters, that sometimes fears it cannot move forward. This story is a whisper to that part: you are still here. You are still whole. You can find yourself.

And now, I begin to notice the small things, the gentle pulse of morning sunlight slipping through the curtains, the quiet resonance of a bird’s song outside, the warmth in a cup of tea I didn’t even think I needed. Each small thing is a thread, weaving me back into the fabric of myself. The memories still exist, they will always exist, but they no longer carry the same weight. They are companions, not captors. They are teachers, not chains.

I take a breath, long and deliberate, and imagine speaking directly to my inner compass. “I see you,” I whisper, “and I am ready to walk with you again.” For a moment, it feels as though something inside me stirs, a subtle hum of life, a quiet but undeniable insistence: you are not lost, Jacob. You are simply returning.

And in that return, I feel the first soft glimmer of hope. Not the blinding, sudden kind, but the slow, tender, steady light of understanding, that the journey is mine, that my path is mine, and that rediscovery is not an event but a series of breaths, of small awakenings, of gentle nudges from strangers and friends alike.

Yes, I am sometimes lost. Yes, I am sometimes broken. But I am also finding myself. And for the first time in a long while, I understand: perhaps finding oneself is not about creating something new, but about noticing what was always there.

Until next time,
