One gloomy, overcast day, Larry was skulking near the forest's edge, letting out a deep, ominous grunt. His feathers shimmered with thunderstorm-purple hues, and his stare could curdle milk. Suddenly, from beneath a pile of dry leaves, something jumped out — a boot. Just an old, forgotten human boot. But to Larry, it was Enemy #1.
Long ago, when Larry was still a young grouse, he had encountered a hunter. That man left behind nothing but his tracks — and boots. Since then, Larry saw them as a symbol of all things terrible: noise, intrusion, the stink of the outside world.
Now this boot, like destiny itself, lay right in his path. Larry puffed up, let out a growl… and charged. Feathers and leaves flew as he smacked the boot with his wings, clawed at it, pecked it into pieces.
From that day on, Larry’s hatred of boots only grew. Whenever he saw one, he’d raise an alarm. Even Awebo had to hide his little toes in a scarf just to avoid triggering Larry’s wrath. Because Larry and boots — mortal enemies forever.
