Day 7 – The End of a Chapter
We broke camp at 7 a.m., knowing this was our final day on the trail in Massachusetts. The morning began with the steady grind up Mount Everett, the state’s third-highest peak. Each step was slow but deliberate, carrying the weight of not just miles, but memories. At the top, we paused for breakfast, taking in the breathtaking view and the quiet presence of the old fire tower’s remains—a reminder that even the strongest structures weather with time.
From there, we climbed Race Mountain, and it felt like the trail was giving us a farewell gift. Long stretches of open rock ledges unfolded before us, offering sweeping views of Connecticut on the horizon. It was my favorite section of the entire state—wild, raw, and impossibly beautiful. We stopped often, lingering at each overlook, sharing stories with fellow hikers. One hiker who caught up to us showed photos of a bear he had just encountered. We heard the rustle of movement in the brush, but the bear never revealed itself. Still, its presence was felt, a quiet reminder of the wildness around us.
Our final push brought us to Sages Ravine, where the stream carved through mossy rocks and shaded forest. We filled our bottles one last time, the water cold and pure—tasting like sweet victory. Moments later, we crossed into Connecticut at the state line, stepping off at Mount Washington Road. Just like that, Massachusetts was behind us.
But what remains is more than miles. These days were filled with laughter, struggle, resilience, and deep connection—to the land, to the people we met along the way, and to my trail partner, Dangle. There were moments of exhaustion, even tears, but also moments of pure joy and awe that will stay with me forever.
Massachusetts gave me more than I ever imagined: its mountains tested me, its beauty healed me, and its people reminded me of kindness. I don’t know what comes next, but I leave this chapter with a heart overflowing with gratitude and the quiet strength that only the trail can give.
