Did you know that there was communal violence on Sri Lanka's first day of independence, February 4, 1948?
Did you know that, two months before S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike was elected in April 1956, there had been a riot between Sinhalese and Tamils at Trincomalee over the language issue?
If you know a thing or two about Sri Lankan history post-independence and still found yourself saying "no," you're not alone.
Mainstream, English-language literature on Sri Lanka's troubled, post-independence history, both on and off the web, is woefully constrained by unchallenged conventions set decades ago. It's replete with omissions, and sometimes even factual errors, and there's been little impetus for alternative research.
Enter Atita. We detour from the beaten path by conducting our own research and investigations, defying limits set long ago by a select few. We uncover and write on incidents that have been neglected by the mainstream, as well as shed further light on more known ones.
Support us in our journey to make these lesser known histories accessible!
