Don't think. Emulate!

Don't think. Emulate!

Oct 30, 2021

There's a lot of silliness on AtariCrypt which might appear pointless to 'the kids of today' or indeed most people lol. But meh we're from a different generation. A different breed of computer user! For example, there were no downloads - we had to order software from a library and then wait for the postman to deliver our goodies.

Well, one such area that has always fascinated me is emulation. Today's computers can emulate powerful machines from not that long ago - like the Playstation or Dreamcast. Our beloved Atari ST can do more or less the same from its time period too. Which is mind-blowing!

Computing didn't just begin in 1985 when Atari released our TOS beast. No, there are older computers like the TRS-80, ZX81, Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64, and many others which the ST loves to take a stab at emulating.

There is a varying degree of success but you must remember that these programs aren't commercial (except for the PC emulator) and were developed by fellow ST nutters when they had spare time. Impressed? You should be!

Personally, I'm always impressed by wonders such as these which are a joy to experiment with. Changing my ST into a ZX Spectrum is incredible because that's the computer I used for years before moving up to the Atari ST. And my Mega STe handles the demand very nicely :-)

It's still a WIP, as I've more to playtest, but check out how you can turn your Atari ST into something else from the 80s. Or even the 70s... https://ataricrypt.blogspot.com/search/label/Emulation
