How to Handle Creative Block

How to Handle Creative Block

"Works of art are landscapes of the mind." Ted Godwin

Tonight I sat down to play with some new brushes and paints. Before I knew it, I got lost in creating loose landscapes and it was a wonderful experience!

I've been trying to work through a creative block and learning how to let go when I paint. I get caught up in trying to create for deadlines, holidays, and only looking for inspiration from other creators on Instagram. My love reminded me that the key is to put my paintbrush in water, pick a color, make a mark on the paper, and just create - don't think - just create.

That's where I started tonight with painting down some water and dropping the paint in, watching it spread. As I moved the paint around randomly picking colors that came to mind, I saw a landscape start to form and just went with it. Four paintings later, I had a landscape series starting and I was loving them!

So the moral of the story is that when creative blocks hits (and yes, it happens to most of us), learn to let go of the result and just create. The creative process will take you where you need to go and even if you don't like the result, you created - yay!

Stay safe, create happy, and keep an eye out for my new landscape series coming soon!
