How to Love Your Art When You Don't: 7 Tips

  1. Give It a Name and a Story
Every artwork becomes more meaningful with a name, a purpose, and a story behind it. This adds value and makes the piece feel more significant, turning it into more than just an image but a creation with depth.

  2. Experiment with Lighting
Try viewing your art under different lighting conditions—lightbulbs, natural sunlight, or even torchlight. I discovered this trick during a blackout while painting and the effect was mesmerizing, especially with translucent paints. It can make your art feel new again.

  3. See It as a Step in Your Learning Process
Treat each piece as a training ground. Focus on what went right and what you want to replicate next time. Each creation is part of your artistic growth, not a final product.

  4. Take a Break and Revisit It Later
Hide the artwork for a week or even a month. You’ll be amazed at how flaws you once noticed now seem cohesive or charming when viewed with fresh eyes.

  5. Are You Seeking Likeability or Value?
Check out at least 100 artists and save screenshots of pieces you love and, more importantly, the ones you dislike. Even famous artists aren’t universally liked—and that’s completely fine!

  6. Likeability Is Subjective
Social media has taught us what is "likable" by repeating certain aesthetics. Challenge yourself to unlearn this. Expand your feed and open your mind to a wider range of art styles.

  7. Find Your True Supporter
Find that one person who genuinely admires you. Show them your art—they’ll become your biggest fans and lifelong supporters.
