Now is the time to intensify your research into college options. When jumping from link to link at an .edu, do not skip the Academics section, assuming the college offers your intended major or serves your interests. 
Case in point: West Virginia University may very well "eliminate 32 academic programs, merge or embed 15 others, and cut faculty positions in 22 departments" by next month. About this time last year, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that "Georgia’s public universities will offer fewer degrees in majors such as French, classical culture and certain specialized teaching fields after the Board of Regents terminated 215 programs at 18 schools" Simmons, a venerable women's college in Boston, has put several majors on notice due to budgetary problems. "The departments to perhaps be eliminated include literature, modern languages, philosophy and sociology." according to Inside Higher Ed.
Reconfigurations like these do not always mean a college is facing an existential crisis. But when taking in what a college has to offer, make sure it offers what you are looking for.
