To Anyone Who Has Lost Themselves.

To Anyone Who Has Lost Themselves.

Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, enjoy the air and behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.” – David McCullough Jr.

I know that feeling all too well. The feeling of being adrift in a vast ocean with no sense of direction or purpose. The feeling of looking in the mirror and not recognizing the person staring back at you. It can be a lonely and frightening experience. But I want you to know that you are not alone.

As Henry David Thoreau once said, “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.”

There are so many of us who have been where you are right now. We have all felt that sense of disconnect from ourselves and the world around us. We have all struggled to find our footing and to make sense of who we are and where we belong. There is a beauty in this struggle, though.

As Rumi famously said, “The wound is the place where the light enters you.”

It is in those moments of darkness that we find the light within ourselves. It is in those moments of uncertainty that we discover our strength and resilience. It is in those moments of searching that we uncover our passions and our purpose.

So, take heart, dear one. You are not lost forever. You are simply in the midst of a journey of self-discovery. And like any journey, there will be ups and downs, twists and turns. But know that you are capable of finding your way back to yourself. Take the time to breathe deeply and to be still.

As Eckhart Tolle said, “In today’s rush, we all think too much, seek too much, want too much and forget about the joy of just being.”

Listen to the beating of your own heart and the rhythm of your breath. Trust that you will find your way through this, that you will emerge stronger and more grounded on the other side.

And when you do, you will look back on this moment and realize that it was not a loss, but a beginning. A beginning of a journey that led you to a deeper understanding of who you are, a journey that gave you the courage to live your life with purpose and passion.

As Maya Angelou once wrote, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
