WELCOME TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL!

Just kidding.

Today’s blog post would be focusing on…. drumrolls…. ORIGAMI ART! Yes that is right, I have prepared a brief but descriptive article/blog post on this particular art. Like I stated in the previous blog, which you can access if you click on this link: https://buymeacoffee.com/angelartbrand/a-new-beginning-3011835, my artwork collections are divided into two, Origami and Oil Paintings.

For all of you wondering what Origami Art is, this blog post is definitely for you, so please dig in!

INTRODUCTION

It all begins from a thought which germinates into curiosity then you ask, “Angel, what is Origami art?”

This intriguing name is born from the union of the two Japanese words “ORI”, which means to fold, and “Kami”, which means paper, Origami art has evolved from its basic meaning of ‘to fold paper’ to an intricate and exquisite art.

HISTORY OF ORIGAMI ART

The history of Origami Art can be traced back to China and Europe, however, paper has been proved to be the ideal material for this art. Paper was invented in China around 105AD, and a Chinese court official, known as Cai Lun, has been traditionally credited as its inventor, although contemporary research suggest that paper was invented earlier than that.  By 900AD, paper yuanbo, also known as gold nuggets, were a staple at traditional Chinese funerals and religious rites. Gold nuggets were created by meticulously folding gold or yellow paper into ingot currency, these ephemeral ornaments were crafted with the intention of being thrown into a fire at the end of the funeral ceremony.

Paper folding was a common practice in Ancient China. [ref: https://mymodernmet.com/history-of-origami-definition/ -What is Origami? Exploring the The History of Origami (mymodernmet.com)]

In the 6th Century, when Buddhism spread from China to Japan, the use of paper was carried therein with other many cultural practices. Japanese monks adopted and adapted the art of paper folding, hence transforming it into a unique cultural practice over a long period of time.

By the Heian period (dated from 794-1185CE), origami began to emerge as a sophisticated art form in Japan. Japanese nobility would often exchange gifts adorned with intricately folded paper designs, which were not just decorations but also held symbolic meanings and were imbued with elements of Japanese aesthetics and spirituality.

The art of origami continued to evolve in Japan, becoming deeply embedded in Japanese culture.

DIGITAL ORIGAMI ART

The history of digital origami art is a fascinating journey that merges traditional paper-folding techniques with modern technology, bringing this ancient craft into the digital age. The evolution of digital origami art can be traced through advancements in computational design, computer graphics, and interactive media.

Join me to dig more into this! ... And for all who can’t wait to dig in, scroll down straight to it’s summary.

Computational Origami

The concept of computational origami began to take shape in the late 20th century. Mathematicians and computer scientists became intrigued by the complex geometry underlying traditional origami.

This deep interest led to the development of algorithms and software capable of simulating and creating origami designs.

One of the pioneers in this field is Dr. Robert J. Lang (Click on link for more- https://langorigami.com/), a physicist and origami artist who has contributed significantly to the mathematical theory of origami and its application in technology and design.

His work demonstrates how algorithms can be used to fold complex and intricate models that were previously thought impossible by hand.

Advancements in Computer Graphics

With the rapid advancement of computer graphics and animation software, digital artists began to explore origami-inspired designs in their work.

Programs such as Adobe Illustrator (https://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator.htmltrator.html) and 3D modeling software like Blender and Maya allowed artists to create digital representations of origami models with precision and flexibility.

These tools enabled the visualization of folds and creases in three dimensions, offering new perspectives on traditional designs and inspiring innovative creations.

Interactive and Generative Art

In recent years, the field of digital origami art has expanded to include interactive and generative art forms. Artists and designers use coding languages such as Processing (https://processing.org/) and p5.js to create interactive origami art that responds to user input or environmental factors.

Generative algorithms can produce unique origami designs in real-time, exploring the infinite possibilities of folding patterns and structures.
