So I recently bought Tom Holkenorg's Percussion library by Orchestral Tools. The sound and energy of this library is amazing, and I needed it for a few projects I am currently working on. Tom handles workflow on percussion different from I do, which slowed down my writing process by a ton.
How this library handles velocity:
The higher the note you play, the louder the drums get hit.
Advantages of this approach:
Full control over which samples get triggered
Easy to avoid certain samples
Recordings always sound the same on every project start due to missing round-robin
The problem I have with this approach is that I like to play percussion rhythms on the keys using a few notes, but emphasizing certain notes while playing to create accents. Like I would when playing a real drum. But as this library doesn't follow the velocity of the keys and only the pitch, I struggled with recording certain rhythms or had to take forever adjusting what I recorded. I also missed Cubase built in tools for velocity to create fast crescendos or decrescendos, which you couldn't just do in a quick way only with notes.
My solution:
I created a Cubase logical editor preset, I trigger in a macro with a key command. This preset adjusts the note pitch according to the velocity. Please watch the following video to find out how everything is done.
I hope this helps you work faster with this brilliant sounding library!
