How Jesus Wants Christians To Meditate : The Christian Daily Devotional - by Alfred

Joshua 1:8 KJV

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

When you hear the word 'Meditation' in popular culture (inspired by TV Land), what comes to mind is the image of a buddhist monk, kung fu master, or soccer mum sitting cross-legged, eyes closed, arms set in place, and the mind being cleared in the chase of peace and tranquility; or perhaps also trying to attain a higher consciousness.

Well, in Christianity, Jesus doesn't want you doing any of that.

He has given us something to meditate on. It's called the word of God.

Jesus doesn't want you clearing your mind. On the contrary he wants to fill your mind. He wants you to stay your mind on the word. He wants to renew your mind; by replacing what was in your mind with the word of God. He wants to exchange your thoughts for his thoughts.

Jesus wants you to have the mind of Christ. His mind. He wants us all to be of one mind. His not Ours.

That's how we'll get true peace and tranquility that even the storms of life can't take from you, rather you calm the storm when that peace is in you.

There are 3 key steps to meditation in Christianity.

First, you have to read, listen, or think about the word (Proverbs 4:21).

Secondly, you have to let that word or portion of the scripture dominate your thoughts by making your thoughts explore and ponder upon its meaning. Savour it with your thoughts over and over again. Do it for as long as it takes until that truth or revelation becomes so real to you, you feel it in your heart as more real than any situation or circumstance you may face. Keep at it until it feels God has just spoken to you & given you a fresh word. You've go so deep you even become conscious of his presence (Isaiah 26:3).

Thirdly, speak the word with your mouth. Make declarations that are consistent with that word … that revelation… that Rhema (Hebrews 13:5c -6).

That's how Jesus wants you to meditate. That's how we meditate in Christianity.

Dear Lord, I thank you for teaching me how to meditate the right way. From today I commit myself to setting aside time daily to meditate on your word. Thank you Lord Father. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
