Finding Joy and Faith in the Midst of Port Harcourt’s Floods : Alfred's Free Christian Daily Devotional

I currently live in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Right now, it is a difficult time for many people. Due to poor city planning and bad drainage systems, there has been widespread flooding across the city, leaving many individuals homeless. People who were once middle-class—and in some cases, homeowners who considered themselves wealthy—now find themselves squatting in the homes of relatives, provided they are fortunate enough to have family willing to accommodate them.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

This may be the last scripture many people would want to quote right now, and some might ask why anyone should rejoice in such circumstances. However, you must understand how the spiritual realm operates. You do not have to be happy only when something good happens, nor do you need to wait for a joke to laugh. You can choose to be happy even in the worst situations.

The Scripture notes that laughter acts like medicine. Even medical science agrees that laughter is therapeutic, which simply confirms what God’s Word has already established. Whether triggered by a joke or not, sincere laughter remains effective medicine. Why wait for someone to say something funny before accessing this free remedy that God placed within your own body?

When God gives an instruction, our responsibility is to obey. You can choose to be sad when adversity strikes, but does sadness change the outcome? If you choose joy instead, no one can steal the internal comfort God gives you, even if they have stripped away your physical comforts.

As Jesus taught, do not fear those who can only harm the body, but fear God, who has power over body, spirit and soul. If circumstances break you physically, do not allow them to break your spirit. Being displaced or homeless due to poor infrastructure or the negligence of others may not be your fault, but how you react is your choice.

Sadness will not resolve the situation, but choosing joy keeps your mind clear, making solutions and brighter days more attainable. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 states, giving thanks in all circumstances is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Just as Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises while in prison, giving thanks and maintaining faith opens the door to receiving a miracle (Acts 16:25-34).
