I was honored to be invited to a private club less than an hour's drive from Ottawa. I won't mention names and places in this post, but I want to share a few impressions I know some readers will recognize.
I recently wrote about the spectacular autumn colors in Ottawa and may continue to do so until the last leaves and the first snow have fallen. However, these photos show a different pallet than the foliage's vibrant reds, yellows, and greens I shared with you in other posts.
It was a grey, misty morning, and we made a long walk around the lake. Since all the land is private property, the path to follow was often overgrown or has even completely disappeared. But walking around a lake makes the orientation relatively simple: you know that you should return at the starting point as long as you keep walking.
Note the tiny house in the distance; it is the clubhouse. And here is a close-up.
And one last photo to share is one of the many beaver dams we saw on our walk.
Beavers build dams that safeguard them against predators like wolves and bears. The barrier creates a pond of deep water so they can construct their home in this pool. In addition, they make a safe island or dome 'lodge,' as you see in the photo, serving as a dry living space and food storage.
These ponds are deep enough to keep out land animals and give beavers room to create submerged entrances to their lodge to leave or flee down these tunnels if danger arises.
