Wallpaper Wednesday - 12/25/24 Merry Christmas!

Dec 25, 2024

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope Santa was good to you all this year. I’m sure you have plans today, so I’m gonna keep it short and sweet.

This week’s focus is on the reds and greens of Road America. A lot of people wanted to see more from Wisconsin, and I honestly haven’t touched most of the photos from that trip, so here you go!

As a Christmas present to you all this week, I’ve got 6 photos instead of the usual 3! Enjoy

This photo made it into my yearly favorites post, and I think it lends itself well to the Christmas spirit, with the green trees just barely making a window for the red of the BMW #25 to poke through. The way the light plays around in the image really gives the feel of an oil painting.

This was taken around Turn 4 (although calling that a turn in disingenuous), on disc golf pad 14 I’m pretty sure. 1/13s, 200mm, f/20, ISO100

While I was walking around to another photo location, I stumbled across this absolutely gorgeous 964 911. I’m not gonna lie, my non-motorsports stuff could use work, because I definitely didn’t do this car justice with any of the shots I got, despite everthing working in my favor.

I should have spent more time here, but Road America is so big that you just can’t stay in one spot for too long. I think my main gripe with this particular angle is the busy background, especially on race day, and that just about 50 feet to the left, you can get one of my favorite angles at the entire track (Which, while writing this, I’ve realized I’ve never posted. Stay tuned)

This was taken at about the halfway point between Turns 6 and 7, on the left side (outside) of the track, looking towards Turn 7. 1/800s, 500mm, f/5.6, ISO160

This is THE Road America shot, and everyone knows it. I think I waited about 30 minutes for my turn to get this angle. Everyone and their mom was there, with fans standing shoulder to shoulder with credentialed media. My advice: get this shot on Thursday or early Friday. You’re never gonna get it on the weekend when the crowds get crazy. Get high, find a gap, and just chill for about 15 minutes.

For those unfamiliar with Road America, this is the outside of Turn 12, “Canada Corner,” on the stairs leading to the spectator stands. 1/1600, 500mm, f/4, ISO200

Turn 5 was one of my most successful spots. Lots of times, you’ll get the cars running wide and making a nice little smoke show as they spin the rear wheels up and bottom out over the rumble strip. The hill to T6 makes a beautiful, clean backdrop with wonderful leading lines.

This is the outside of T5, inside of the track technically. 1/1000, 500mm, f/4, ISO200

Like I said, I loved my time at Turn 5. I think I visited that spot every day at least twice because no matter what, I knew I’d get something good. Instead of facing T,6 I moved down a bit and looked towards the straight. The mid-morning sun made for some great lighting. I personally love harsh shadows, but I’d love to see this spot around sunset.
