Centuries ago, shoppers had to rely on their own instincts to avoid being cheated in the marketplace. That’s where the phrase “buyer beware” comes from. It’s a translation of the Latin caveat emptor, meaning “let the buyer beware.” If a merchant sold you a rusty sword or rotten grain, that was on you for not inspecting it closely enough. Later, as trade and law evolved, a new phrase appeared—caveat venditor—“let the seller beware,” when sellers were forced to take more responsibility for honesty.
But today’s marketplace isn’t about grain or swords or goods you can hold. It’s about your attention. Your time. Your focus. That’s the new currency. Which means the warning has changed. It’s no longer buyer beware. It’s viewer beware.
Social media platforms are not offering free entertainment out of kindness. They’re selling your time to advertisers, and they don’t care how they get it. Outrage spreads faster than wisdom. Fake drama spreads faster than real skill. And that’s why your feeds are flooded with garbage. Look around—people on Facebook and TikTok are deliberately making food horribly, or staging bizarre, cringe-worthy stunts. Not because they can’t do better… but because anger and shock bring more clicks, more comments, more shares.
The algorithms don’t reward quality or truth. They reward engagement. And the cheapest way to grab your attention is to provoke you. To waste your time with irritation, distraction, or false promises.
Creating content of real value—something that teaches, entertains, or inspires—takes time, effort, and talent. But fake content? It takes almost nothing. A poorly made, rage-inducing video can pull millions of views in minutes, while real craftsmanship is buried under the noise.
We are living in an age of false content. In truth, it’s not content at all—it’s distraction bait. It’s designed to hijack your focus and keep you trapped.
This is why you must guard your attention like it’s your most valuable possession. Because it is. Your time is the one thing you can never get back. Every wasted scroll, every pointless click is a little piece of your life that someone else just pocketed.
Be ruthless with your attention. Be deliberate about where your focus goes. Don’t let someone with zero talent, zero effort, and zero value steal minutes, hours, or days of your life.
