Looking Back

Mar 30, 2024

Ten years ago on Affordable Football, I wrote positively about season tickets at both Stoke City, then firmly established in the Premier League, and Liverpool.

Even at that time, articles on the top-flight were relatively rare on the blog but they have gradually dwindled away to nothing over the last few years, especially as I try to keep things positive on there.

Stories about season ticket price rises in the Premier League have been plentiful in recent weeks, as clubs announce their plans for next season and there hasn't been too much to be positive about for many supporters, not just with straightforward price rises but the nibbling away of concessions aimed at older supporters, emergency workers and the like.

In April 2020, the demise of Rhyl FC was confirmed, a few weeks into the pandemic (although that may have been merely the final blow).

As fans mooted the idea of a phoenix club, the quote from Rhyl FC managing director Adam Roche rang true at that time, and still does today, when he said: 'You get one chance to start up a new club and do it right.'

And do it right they have, CPD Y Rhyl 1879 announcing last week that one of the key objectives of their four-year journey, to secure the future of the Belle Vue ground, is getting closer to reality with the approval in principle of their Community Ownership Fund bid.
