Returning to one of my favorite painting media, Watercolor, I rolled out materials that allows for painterly effects one achieves using in Oil paint and acrylics.
Ox Gall is used for Watercolor to spread the media around, dispersing the pigments across the surface of the ground. Gum Arabic is, in watercolor, used as a binder, acts much like as Linseed oil is used in oil painting, it affords greater diffusion of pigments and slower drying time, permitting for greater working and reworking of the media. While activating watercolor is as simple as adding water, Once laid to the ground(typically paper)oversaturation can both damage the surface and spread the paint in a way that limits artist's control of production and result.
After building layers media throw use of watercolor pencil. I apply paint using brushes, with an application of Ox Gall and water to disperse the underpainting of pencils and building up subsequent layers using the Gum Arabic. Through us of these solutions I gain the darker values behind the subject while benefitting from the transparency inherent to watercolor. While still a work in progress I look forward to showing the results in a future posting.
