In the last month, I've found myself switching jobs twice, both promising something different online but ending up as the same commission-based sales role. Expected customer service roles turn into door-to-door sales, not associated directly with brands like AT&T but rather contracted third-party setups.
These jobs often portray a pathway to leadership, encouraging individuals to recruit and manage teams, creating a cycle of hiring and selling. Yet, for someone like me, who isn't naturally inclined towards sales, the reality is a tough pill to swallow. Despite efforts, success remains elusive, adding to the complexity of an already challenging life situation.
Recently, I found myself in a neighborhood, script in hand, attempting to sell pest control services. But the truth was far from what we told potential customers. When you're part of a scheme that involves misleading people about their neighbors' engagement, it becomes hard to find motivation. And after a day of pounding the pavement with no success, the realization hits hard: this isn't sustainable.
The sales job pressures are immense, especially when reliant on commissions with no guaranteed income. Financial insecurity looms, compounded by the fact that this gig economy demands time I don't have, diverting attention from securing a stable livelihood. The nagging question remains: how much time to invest in a venture that may never pay off?
I've tried reaching for other opportunities. Calls with prospective employers end abruptly due to logistical challenges, like having no driver's license when one is required. Meanwhile, applications to places like BJ's linger unresolved. The grind of job hunting is relentless, a taxing endeavor especially when you're homeless and nearing despair.
The struggle is not just financial but deeply personal. Wearing down is an understatement; the constant need for assistance is draining, fueling a desire to escape this weary cycle. Every small hope seems to wither into another dead-end. The metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel often reveals itself to be just another passing glimmer, offering no true solace or resolution.
Isolation compounds the strain. Despite being amidst people, the loneliness persists. It’s as if genuine connections are out of reach, leaving behind an emptiness that feels heavier than the solitude itself. This emotional turmoil intensifies thoughts of wanting everything to end, reflecting a profound internal pain that's vivid yet intangible.
The conversation isn't easy, nor is living on the fringe of society in a relentless climate. Bugs at night, the lack of basic amenities, and the toll on health make each day a battle. Wishing for something different feels futile when the light seems continually eclipsed by despair.
For now, it's a struggle for survival against the odds, a bid to find purpose and stability amidst adversity. The journey is fraught with challenges, but even in this darkness, the hope remains that something will eventually change for the better, though it's hard to see how in the current moment.
