The Radical Urgency of Following Jesus

The Radical Urgency of Following Jesus

Shalom everyone,

I wanted to share a quick but powerful reflection on what it truly costs to answer the call of faith. We often treat commitment as something we can handle when life calms down, but scripture shows us a completely different standard.

Here are the breakdown realities of what following Jesus looks like when we compare the immediate obedience of Abraham to a hesitant disciple in the New Testament:

  • The Torah portion Lech Lecha (Genesis 12–17) translates to "Go forth!" and focuses on the pivotal life and faith of Abraham.

  • God abruptly chose Abraham (then named Abram), and his chosenness is defined by the fact that he always listened and complied when God spoke.

  • At 75 years old, Abraham was commanded by God to leave his country, his relatives, and everything familiar behind.

  • Abraham obeyed immediately and set out without a map, a destination, or any modern navigation tools, traveling only with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot.

  • This calling was incredibly difficult because Abraham's father, Terah, lived for another 60 years after Abraham left Haran.

  • In the ancient world, leaving family behind meant leaving forever, making Abraham's complete obedience a profound sacrifice.

  • This biblical account parallels a New Testament encounter where a would-be disciple asked Jesus for permission to "first go and bury my father".

  • The phrase "bury my father" was an ancient figure of speech meaning the man wanted to delay his commitment until his parents passed away.

  • Jesus responded that "no one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God," emphasizing that true discipleship cannot be delayed.

  • Becoming a disciple of Jesus requires following Abraham's example, meaning it is not a decision to be made lightly, conveniently, or put off for later.

  • Because of his immediate obedience, God established a wondrous covenant with Abraham, promising him land, a legacy, and a lineage leading directly to the Messiah.

  • Ultimately, Abraham is celebrated throughout scripture as the ultimate example of faith, while the reluctant disciple who tried to bargain with Jesus for more time remains entirely anonymous.

Reflection Question:
Jesus warns that anyone who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God. What is the primary "safety net" or comfort you are tempted to look back toward, and what practical step can you take today to commit to following Jesus without delay?
