Barcelona is famous for its beaches, but the coastline you see today is surprisingly modern.
In this first episode of A Casual European Guy, we go back to the 1992 Olympics and look at how the games helped transform Barcelona's relationship with the Mediterranean.
Before the games, much of the city's waterfront was dominated by industry, railway infrastructure and polluted water. The project helped reconnect the city with the sea, transforming former industrial areas of Poblenou into the Vila Olímpica, creating the Port Olímpic, recovering beaches and adding new promenades, walking paths and cycleways.
We'll explore the history behind places like Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and Somorrostro, as well as the Torre Mapfre, Hotel Arts, Plaça dels Voluntaris Olímpics and the surviving Can Folch chimney, a reminder of the industrial Barcelona that existed before the transformation.
But the story didn't stop in 1992. We also head further along the coast to the Parc del Fòrum and the unusual Banys del Fòrum, part of another major phase of Barcelona's coastal regeneration in 2004.
Finally, we return to Montjuïc, where the story began, and take a look at the Anella Olímpica, the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys and the Torre de Comunicacions de Montjuïc.
