The first time most people see Dal Lake at dawn, they go quiet. Mist sits on the water, a shikara slides past loaded with lotus stems and fresh bread, and the Zabarwan hills turn pink behind the houseboats.

That moment is why so many travellers search for Kashmir tour packages every month. It’s also why we started Travel Wiki Kashmir.

But a great Kashmir trip doesn’t happen by accident. Pick the wrong season, squeeze too many valleys into too few days, or book with an agent who hides the “extras,” and paradise turns into hours in a taxi.

This guide is what we tell friends who ask how to plan a Kashmir trip: which package fits you, a realistic Kashmir itinerary, what it really costs, and when to go.

Quick answer: Most travellers should book a 5–7 day Srinagar-to-Srinagar package covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Budget roughly ₹8,000–₹30,000 per person (excluding flights), depending on season and hotel category. Spring and autumn give the best mix of weather, colour, and value.

Why Book a Kashmir Tour Package Instead of Going DIY?

You can plan a trip to Kashmir on your own. But a good Kashmir trip package solves three headaches that catch first-timers out.

Local taxi rules. In Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, outside cabs usually stop at a point and local union taxis or ponies take over for the inner valleys. A local travel agency in Kashmir knows these handovers and prices them in advance.
Hotels and houseboats. Houseboat quality on Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake varies wildly. A trusted operator has stayed in the boats they sell.
Timing. Road conditions, gondola queues, and snow closures change daily. Someone on the ground can reshuffle your day before you wake up.

That’s the real value of booking with experienced Kashmir tours and travels specialists: you spend your holiday looking at mountains, not at your phone.

Types of Kashmir Holiday Packages (and Who They Suit)

Not every Kashmir holiday package is built the same. Here’s how the most popular options break down.

Kashmir Packages for Couples

Honeymooners usually want slower days, a night on a houseboat, and dinner somewhere with a view. A good Jammu Kashmir couple package keeps drives short and adds a private sunset shikara ride.

It should also leave room for a lazy morning by the Lidder River in Pahalgam. Four or five nights is the sweet spot.

Family Kashmir Vacation Packages

Families need comfortable hotels, short drives, and something for every age. Think the Gulmarg Gondola, pony rides to Baisaran, snow play in Sonamarg, and an evening at the Mughal Gardens. Five to six nights keeps everyone happy.

Friends, Groups, and Adventure Trips

Groups often pick sharing tours to keep the Kashmir trip cost low. Then they splurge on skiing in Gulmarg, river rafting in Pahalgam, or a pony trek to Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg.

Kashmir with Vaishno Devi

Many travellers combine a pilgrimage with sightseeing. These Jammu and Kashmir tour packages start in Katra with the Mata Vaishno Devi darshan, then move to Srinagar. They’re among the best Jammu Kashmir tour packages if you arrive by train at Jammu.

Srinagar-to-Srinagar Packages

If you’re flying in, a Kashmir tour package from Srinagar is the most practical choice. It starts and ends at Srinagar airport, so you skip the long drive from Jammu and get more sightseeing per rupee.

Who a Standard Package Is Not For

If you want serious multi-day treks (like the Kashmir Great Lakes), or you’re planning to drive on to Ladakh, a standard sightseeing package won’t fit. Ask for a custom plan instead.

Top Places to Visit on a Kashmir Tour

Every good Kashmir tour is built around a few key bases. Here’s what each one offers, and how long to give it.

Srinagar: Lakes, Gardens, and the Old City

Srinagar is where nearly every trip begins. Spend a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, visit the Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, and Chashme Shahi), and walk the old city around Jamia Masjid and the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine.

Give Srinagar at least one full day. Most Srinagar holiday packages also use it as the base for day trips.

Gulmarg: Meadows, Snow, and the Gondola

About 1.5 hours from Srinagar, Gulmarg is famous for one of the highest cable cars in the world. The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases, to Kongdoori and on to Apharwat.

Winter brings skiing and snow; summer brings flower-filled meadows. The Srinagar to Gulmarg day trip is a must on any itinerary.

Pahalgam: River Valleys and Pine Forests

Pahalgam sits where the Lidder River opens into three postcard valleys: Aru, Betaab, and Chandanwari. It’s about 2.5–3 hours from Srinagar.

We recommend staying at least one night here rather than rushing a Pahalgam Srinagar day trip. Evenings by the river are half the magic.

Sonamarg: The Meadow of Gold

Sonamarg, roughly 2.5 hours from Srinagar along the Sindh River, is the gateway to Thajiwas Glacier. It’s best from May to October, when the road is reliably open.

Srinagar Sonamarg is normally done as a full-day trip.

Hidden Gems: Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, and Gurez

If you have extra days, these quieter valleys are worth it. Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are easy day trips from Srinagar with soft meadows and streams.

Gurez, near the Line of Control, is remote and stunning, but needs an overnight stay and a little extra planning.

Sample Kashmir Itinerary: 6 Nights / 7 Days

This Kashmir travel itinerary is the one we recommend most. It covers the “big four” without rushing, and it’s the backbone of most of our Kashmir trip packages.

Day 1 – Arrive in Srinagar. Airport pickup, houseboat check-in, and a sunset shikara ride past Char Chinar and the floating market area.
Day 2 – Srinagar sightseeing. Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi, and Pari Mahal, then the old city and a cup of noon chai.
Day 3 – Srinagar to Gulmarg. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 to Apharwat if the weather allows. Back to Srinagar for the night.
Day 4 – Srinagar to Sonamarg. Follow the Sindh River to Sonamarg. Hire a pony to Thajiwas Glacier. Return in the evening.
Day 5 – Srinagar to Pahalgam. Stop at the Pampore saffron fields and the Awantipora ruins on the way. Overnight in Pahalgam.
Day 6 – Pahalgam valleys. Aru, Betaab, and Chandanwari by local union cab, or a short pony ride to Baisaran meadow.
Day 7 – Departure. Drive back to Srinagar airport with walnuts, kahwa, and a camera full of memories.

Short on time? A 4 nights / 5 days Kashmir trip itinerary drops Sonamarg or does Pahalgam as a day trip.

Got longer? Add Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, or Gurez. One word of caution: Gulmarg Sonamarg or Gulmarg Pahalgam on the same day isn’t realistic, so give each valley its own day.

Kashmir Tour Cost: What Should You Really Pay?

“What’s the Kashmir tour price?” is the first question everyone asks. The honest answer: it depends on the season, hotel category, and how many people share the car.

As a rough guide for 2026, per person, excluding flights:

Duration Budget (sharing) Standard / Deluxe Premium / Luxury 3 Nights / 4 Days ₹6,000 – ₹9,000 ₹12,000 – ₹18,000 ₹25,000+ 4 Nights / 5 Days ₹8,000 – ₹12,000 ₹15,000 – ₹22,000 ₹30,000+ 6 Nights / 7 Days ₹12,000 – ₹16,000 ₹20,000 – ₹30,000 ₹40,000+

Indicative ranges only. Always confirm the final Kashmir trip price with your operator.

What’s Usually Included (and What Isn’t)

Usually included: hotel or houseboat stay, breakfast and dinner, a private cab for transfers and sightseeing, and often a shikara ride.

Usually extra: Gulmarg Gondola tickets, union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, ponies, sledges, snow chains in winter, room heaters, lunch, and adventure activities.

How to Lower Your Kashmir Trip Cost

Travel in shoulder months (March, September–November) instead of May–June.
Book gondola tickets online in advance to avoid queues and touts.
Share a cab with another couple or family.
Choose one houseboat night instead of several; it’s the experience, not the length, that matters.
A quote that lists every extra upfront almost always works out cheaper than a “too good to be true” deal that adds them on the spot.

Best Time for a Kashmir Trip

Kashmir is a year-round destination. Each season just shows you a different valley.

Season Months Why go Keep in mind Spring March – April Tulip Garden, almond blossom, mild days Tulip bloom lasts only a few weeks Summer May – June Sonamarg, Pahalgam, trekking Peak prices; book early Monsoon July – August Lush meadows, fewer crowds Occasional rain; Amarnath Yatra traffic near Pahalgam Autumn September – November Golden chinars, apple harvest, great value Cold nights from late October Winter December – February Snow and skiing in Gulmarg Sonamarg road can close; keep a buffer day

Our personal favourite is autumn. The chinar trees turn copper, the air is crisp, and Srinagar holiday packages cost noticeably less than in summer.

How to Reach Kashmir

By air: Srinagar International Airport has direct flights from Delhi (around 1.5 hours), Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and other major cities. This is the fastest way to start a Kashmir trip.
By train: Take a train to Jammu Tawi or Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Check current schedules, as rail connectivity into the Valley has been expanding.
By road: Jammu to Srinagar is roughly 250 km. Expect 6–8 hours depending on traffic and weather.

How to Choose the Best Tour Packages for Kashmir

With hundreds of operators online, picking the best travel packages for Kashmir can feel overwhelming. Here’s the checklist we’d use ourselves.

Go local. A Kashmir-based team knows the roads, hoteliers, and seasonal quirks far better than a booking desk in another city.
Ask for hotel names, not just “3-star deluxe,” and check their reviews.
Check the itinerary is realistic. If it squeezes Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam into two days, walk away.
Get exclusions in writing. Gondola, ponies, and union taxis should be clearly listed.
Insist on customisation. The best Kashmir tour packages fit your dates, pace, and budget, not the other way round.

That’s exactly how we build every trip. Browse our hand-picked best Kashmir tour packages for couples, families, and groups, or ask us to tailor one from scratch.

Practical Tips for Your Jammu and Kashmir Trip

Mobile network: Prepaid SIMs from outside the region generally don’t work in Jammu and Kashmir. Carry a postpaid connection.
Cash: ATMs are common in Srinagar but scarce in the valleys. Carry some cash for ponies and local cabs.
Dress: Layers, always. Even in summer, evenings in Gulmarg and Sonamarg get cold.
Food: Try Wazwan, rogan josh, harissa (in winter), and a proper cup of kahwa.
Respect: Ask before photographing people, and dress modestly at shrines and mosques.
Stay updated: Check current travel advisories and road status a few days before you travel. A local operator can tell you what’s happening on the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kashmir Tour Packages

How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?

Five to seven days is ideal for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. A 3-night trip covers Srinagar plus one or two day trips, but it will feel rushed.

What is the average Kashmir trip cost for a couple?

For 4 nights / 5 days in a standard hotel with a private cab, couples typically spend around ₹30,000–₹45,000 in total, excluding flights. Luxury houseboats and premium hotels push this higher.

Is it better to start from Jammu or Srinagar?

If you’re flying, start from Srinagar; it saves 6–8 hours of driving. If you’re coming by train or adding Vaishno Devi, Jammu and Srinagar tour packages that start in Jammu or Katra make more sense.

Can I visit Kashmir in winter?

Yes. Winter Kashmir vacation packages focus on Gulmarg snow, skiing, and cosy houseboat stays. Keep a buffer day for snowfall-related road delays.

Do I need a permit to visit Kashmir?

Indian citizens don’t need a permit for the main tourist areas like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. Some border areas have extra requirements, so check before you go. Foreign nationals should check current rules before booking.

Are Srinagar tour packages different from Kashmir packages?

Not really. Srinagar tour packages are usually Kashmir tours based in Srinagar, with day trips to Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Different name, same experience.

Can I customise a Kashmir tour package?

Absolutely. You can change hotels, add houseboat nights, swap valleys, or add Vaishno Devi. A good operator will rebuild the plan around your dates and budget.

Ready to Plan Your Kashmir Trip?

Kashmir isn’t a place you tick off a list. It’s a place you feel: the call to prayer echoing over Dal Lake, the smell of saffron in Pampore, the silence of fresh snow in Gulmarg.

The right plan makes all the difference. Take your time, ask questions, and choose people who genuinely love this valley.

When you’re ready, our team at Travel Wiki Kashmir will help you pick from our Kashmir tour packages, fine-tune the itinerary, and look after every detail, from airport pickup to that last cup of kahwa.
