I am excited to share an update on the progress of my first complete adventure, “Into the Everforest”, and to talk a little about the process of worldbuilding for a one-shot adventure. The adventure is going to be published soon and serves as a door opener for new players and dungeon masters. It is designed for a group of 3-5 players of level 1-2.
To begin, let's differentiate between worldbuilding in general, where we create huge planetary maps with continents, cities, kingdoms, and mountain ranges, and the relatively confined space required for a small adventure lasting about 3-5 hours. For “Into the Everforest”, we needed to create an unnamed city to serve as the starting point for the quest, as well as everything concerning the enchanted forest where the adventure takes place.
To keep the adventure as straightforward as possible for beginner players, I created a linear path for them to follow in the form of a river going straight into the forest. I added an old man rowing a boat, providing an invitation for the party to join in the adventure. Here is the introduction text found in the text of the adventure module:
“Your journey begins at a riverbank, where an old man invites you to follow him on his ferry. Rumors say that those who venture into the woods never return, but will you dare to take the risk? With each stop along the river, you will face new challenges and make choices that will shape your path towards the final encounter with the wicked creature roaming these wondrous lands.”
As the module nears completion, I am excited to share the final product with you all. I hope this brief insight into the worldbuilding process for a one-shot adventure has been helpful for those looking to create their own adventures. Stay tuned for more updates!
