Wheel Highlighter Privacy Policy

Wheel Highlighter is a browser extension for highlighting web pages and saving those highlights as local cards. This policy explains what data the extension handles and how that data is used.

Summary

Wheel Highlighter is local-first.

  • No account is required.

  • No developer-run backend is used.

  • No ads or tracking are used.

  • Highlighted text, reaction/impression text, notes, titles, saved page URLs, optional source links, optional image attachments, and settings are stored locally in the user's browser profile.

  • Wheel Highlighter does not collect full browsing history. It stores URLs only for pages where the user saves highlights.

  • Wheel Highlighter does not sell user data.

  • Wheel Highlighter does not use user data for advertising.

Information the extension handles

Wheel Highlighter handles information only to provide its highlighting and card features:

  • Highlighted text selected by the user.

  • Reaction/impression selections created by the user.

  • Card titles and notes written by the user.

  • Card colors, group names, and card organization state.

  • Page URLs for pages where the user has saved highlights.

  • Optional source URLs dragged or added by the user.

  • Optional image attachments dragged or added by the user.

  • Custom page names created by the user in the pages strip.

  • Favicon-derived color cache for saved page hosts, used only to visually tint page tabs.

  • Extension settings such as whether the extension is on or off.

  • Temporary AI model download status, used only to show loading progress in the popup.

This information may include website content, saved page URLs, and user-generated content because the extension's purpose is to let the user save and organize selected text from web pages.

How information is used

Wheel Highlighter uses this information to:

  • Recreate highlights and reactions/impressions when the user returns to a page.

  • Show saved highlights as editable cards.

  • Let the user add notes, rename cards, rename color groups, and rename saved page tabs.

  • Let the user attach an image or source link to a card.

  • Let the user browse saved pages from the pages strip.

  • Focus or open an existing browser tab when the user chooses a saved page.

  • Generate short card titles on the user's device.

  • Color page tabs using favicon-derived colors.

Wheel Highlighter does not use this information for advertising, profiling, analytics, or selling data.

Where information is stored

Highlight data is stored locally using browser extension storage in the user's browser profile. This includes saved card data, reaction/impression data, saved page URLs, optional image attachments, optional source links, custom names, color groups, and extension settings.

Wheel Highlighter does not upload saved highlights, reactions/impressions, notes, titles, URLs, image attachments, or card data to a developer server.

Users can remove data by deleting cards, clearing highlights for a page, removing saved page entries, clearing browser extension storage, or uninstalling the extension.

AI title generation

Wheel Highlighter can generate short titles for cards using an on-device AI model.

The model files may be downloaded from Hugging Face/CDN infrastructure on first use and cached by the browser. The highlighted text is processed locally in the extension after the model is available. Wheel Highlighter does not send highlighted text, reactions/impressions, notes, titles, page URLs, image attachments, or card data to the developer for AI processing.

Favicon colors and browser tabs

Wheel Highlighter uses browser extension APIs to:

  • Read the current tab URL when needed for page-specific highlighting and saved-page organization.

  • Open or focus a saved URL when the user chooses that action.

  • Read a page favicon through the browser's extension APIs when available so the pages strip can use a visual color cue.

The favicon color result is cached locally by host. It is used only for the pages strip's visual styling.

Sharing and third parties

Wheel Highlighter does not sell, rent, or share user data with advertisers, data brokers, or analytics providers.

Wheel Highlighter does not operate a backend that receives user highlights or notes.

The extension may contact third-party infrastructure only for functionality the user sees:

  • Hugging Face/CDN infrastructure may be contacted to download the local AI model files.

  • Websites or browser favicon resources may be contacted through the browser to obtain favicon imagery for saved-page tab colors.

These requests are not used by Wheel Highlighter to send the user's saved highlights, reactions/impressions, notes, titles, image attachments, or card data to the developer.

Security

Wheel Highlighter stores data in the user's local browser profile through browser extension storage. Data remains under the user's browser/profile environment.

Because Wheel Highlighter does not run a developer backend for saved card data, there is no developer server where highlight data is stored.

Limited Use statement

Wheel Highlighter's use of user data is limited to providing and improving its single purpose: highlighting web pages and organizing selected content as local cards.

Wheel Highlighter's use of information is limited to providing the extension's user-facing features and complies with applicable extension store privacy requirements, including limited-use requirements.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when Wheel Highlighter changes how it handles data. If future versions add sync, accounts, cloud backup, sharing, payments, or server-side features, this policy must be updated before those features are released.
