The Lie We Were Sold About "Someday"

The Lie We Were Sold About "Someday"

Jan 07, 2026

Hey friends,

I want to get a bit personal today.

You know that heavy feeling in your chest on a Sunday evening? That subtle dread of facing another week on the treadmill?

We feel it because we are following a script that no longer works.

We were told that if we just grit our teeth, work hard for 40 years, and save every penny, we will be rewarded with "The Golden Years" at age 65. We are told to delay our joy, delay our rest, and delay our real lives until we are "done."

But what if we are living for a finish line that keeps moving?

I’ve been reading about the concept of the "100-Year Life" and a new movement towards "Mini-Retirements," and it honestly made me emotional. It made me realise how hard we are all being on ourselves.

The old model was a sprint to the grave. The new model? It’s a series of strolls.

We Are Building Cathedrals, Not Malls

There was a beautiful metaphor in a report I read recently that I can't stop thinking about.

When you rush through life trying to hit a retirement number, you are building a shopping mall. It’s functional. It’s efficient. It generates cash. But it has no soul. And frankly, nobody wants to spend 40 years building a shopping mall.

But when you accept that life is long—that you might live to 100—you realise you have time to build a cathedral.

Cathedrals take lifetimes to build.

They have different phases.

Sometimes, construction stops so the architects can think.

Sometimes, you just sit in the unfinished pews and rest.

That is what a "mini-retirement" is. It isn’t laziness. It is a strategic pause to look at what you are building and ask, "Do I still love this?"

Your "Invisible" Bank Account

We obsess over our financial bank accounts, but we ignore our Vitality Assets.

Your friendships.

Your relationship with your kids.

Your physical health.

Your mental peace.

If you bankrupt these assets in your 30s and 40s just to get rich by 60, you haven't won. You have lost.

Taking a break—whether it’s six months to travel, a year to learn a new skill, or just a few months to care for a loved one—is how you deposit into that invisible account.

Let's Stop Waiting

I am writing this because I want us to give ourselves permission to step off the treadmill. You don't need to wait until you are 65 to live a life that feels like your own.

Start small. Plan a sabbatical. Save a "Freedom Fund" specifically for buying back your time, not just for old age.

Life is too long to be miserable, and too short to wait for "someday."

Build your cathedral.
