Introduction
Hebrews 11:6 (AMP) is a cornerstone scripture that emphasizes the necessity of faith in our relationship with God. It teaches that faith is not only a requirement to please God but also the key to receiving His rewards. This scripture highlights that God is not distant or indifferent; He actively rewards those who seek Him with earnest trust. For today’s believers, this truth underscores the importance of living a life rooted in faith, expecting both present and eternal blessings. It reminds us that faith is the channel through which we experience God’s goodness and fulfillment of His promises.
Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!
Hebrews 11:6 (AMP): “But without faith it is impossible to [walk with God and] please Him, for whoever comes [near] to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He rewards those who [earnestly and diligently] seek Him.”
The Context of Hebrews 11:6
Hebrews 11, often called the “Hall of Faith,” recounts the stories of individuals who exemplified unwavering trust in God. The chapter begins with a definition of faith as the “Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].” (Hebrews 11:1 AMP).
And Verse 6 serves as a foundational statement, explaining that faith is essential to pleasing God and receiving His rewards.
This scripture speaks to the nature of faith, requiring both belief in God’s existence and confidence in His goodness. For the original audience—believers facing persecution—this truth was a call to persevere in faith despite challenges. For today’s Christians, it offers the same encouragement, reminding us that God is faithful to reward those who trust in Him.
Relevance to Today’s Believers
Hebrews 11:6 is profoundly relevant to modern believers navigating a world filled with uncertainty and competing values. It challenges Christians to prioritize faith as the basis of their relationship with God. Faith is not just an abstract concept; it is an active trust that God exists, hears our prayers, and rewards those who diligently seek Him.
For today’s believers, this scripture is a reminder that faith is both a necessity and a privilege. It assures us that God rewards faith in tangible ways—through His presence, provision, peace, and guidance in this life, as well as eternal rewards in heaven. It calls Christians to cultivate a faith that not only believes but also expects to see God’s goodness in every season of life.
Supporting Scriptures
Matthew 6:33 (AMP): “But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.” This scripture complements Hebrews 11:6, emphasizing that seeking God brings rewards, both material and spiritual.
James 1:6-7 (AMP): “But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind. For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord.
Faith is presented as the base foundation for receiving God’s blessings and guidance. Remember, we are,“[actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith” Ephesians 2:8 (AMP).
Psalm 84:11 (AMP): “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows grace and favor and honor; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
This verse reinforces the promise that God rewards those who live in faith and obedience. I love this, “no good thing will He withhold”, let that sink in, Selah!
Romans 8:28 (AMP): “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.”
This scripture assures believers that faith leads to God’s purposeful blessings, even through every challenge.
Revelation 22:12 (AMP): “[Behold, I (Jesus) am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one [according to the merit of] his deeds.”
This verse points to the wonderful, eternal rewards for those who live faithfully in Christ.
Applications for Modern Faith
Developing Faith that Pleases God: Believers are encouraged to nurture a faith that actively seeks God, trusting in His existence and His promises. How do we nurture faith? By spending time with God in prayer, in His Word, and in fellowship with other believers. And by giving thanks and praise to God, regardless of the circumstances and situations. Then we will have an experiential faith that produces results.
Trusting God’s Rewards in This Life: Faith assures us of God’s provision, peace, and guidance, reminding us that He meets our needs as we walk with Him.
Focusing on Eternal Rewards: This scripture challenges Christians to live with an eternal perspective, valuing heavenly rewards over temporary gains.
Seeking God Diligently: Hebrews 11:6 calls believers to prioritize time with God in prayer, worship, and study, fostering a relationship that is rewarded with His presence.
Encouraging Others to Walk in Faith: By sharing personal testimonies of God’s rewards, believers can inspire others to trust Him fully.
Rewards of Faith: Present and Eternal
Present Rewards:
Peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).
God’s provision for physical and emotional needs (Matthew 6:33).
Joy in the midst of trials (James 1:2-4).
Spiritual guidance and wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Eternal Rewards:
Everlasting life with God (John 3:16).
Crowns of righteousness and glory (2 Timothy 4:8; 1 Peter 5:4).
An eternal inheritance (1 Peter 1:4).
Fellowship with Christ forever (Revelation 21:3).
