“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes],”

Introduction

In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses delivers a powerful message to the Israelites as they stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (AMPC), Moses, speaking as God’s mouthpiece, lays before them a stark choice: life and good or death and evil. This passage isn’t just about the immediate physical consequences of their choices but also delves into the deeper spiritual and generational impacts of obedience or disobedience to God's commands. As believers today, the choice Moses presents is just as relevant, calling us to consider the paths we choose in our spiritual journey and the far-reaching effects of those decisions.

Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!

“See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil. [If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which] I command you today, to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land into which you go to possess. But if your [mind and] heart turn away and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall surely perish, and you shall not live long in the land which you pass over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live And may love the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him. For He is your life and the length of your days, that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

In this passage, Moses, as a spokesperson for God, addresses the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. He presents them with a crucial choice: life and good, or death and evil. This choice isn't limited to physical life and death; it encompasses the quality of life, blessings, and obedience to God's commandments. The passage can be divided into several key points:

The Clear Choice: Moses emphasizes that the choice is unmistakably clear – life and blessings through obedience to God's commands or death and curses through disobedience. This stark contrast sets the stage for the gravity of the decision the Israelites must make.

Obedience and Love: The path to life is defined by obedience to God's commandments and statutes, rooted in a genuine love for Him. This obedience goes beyond mere adherence to rules; it reflects a heart that desires to walk in God's ways.

Blessings and Curses: The consequences of the choice are laid out – blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. These consequences extend to future generations, highlighting the far-reaching impact of individual decisions.

Warning against Idolatry: The passage warns against turning away from God to worship other gods, which leads to spiritual death. Idolatry represents a rejection of the life and blessings God offers.

Choose Life: Moses passionately urges the Israelites to choose life, emphasizing the importance of their decision. This choice isn't just for personal benefit but also for the benefit of their descendants. Choosing life involves loving God, obeying His voice, and remaining devoted to Him.

God as the Source of Life: The passage concludes by highlighting God as the source of life and the sustainer of days. Clinging to God is equated with choosing life. This profound connection between God and life underscores the intimate relationship believers have with their Creator.

Relevance to Today's Believers:

Freedom of Choice: Just as the Israelites had the freedom to choose between life and death, believers today have the same freedom to choose their spiritual path. This choice is ongoing and reflects a commitment to follow God's ways.

Obedience and Blessing: The principle of obedience leading to blessings remains applicable. When believers obey God's Word and walk in His ways, they open themselves to His abundant blessings and favor.

Idolatry and Distractions: Today's believers are also tempted by modern forms of idolatry – things that take precedence over God in their lives. This passage serves as a reminder to prioritize God and reject anything that hinders a genuine relationship with Him.

Generational Impact: Choices made today can impact future generations. Just as the Israelites' decisions affected their descendants, the way believers live out their faith can shape the spiritual trajectory of their families.

God as the Source of Life: The passage's declaration that God is our life remains true. Believers find their identity, purpose, and sustenance in their relationship with God. He is the source of true life, both spiritually and eternally.

Love and Devotion: The call to love God and cling to Him is a call to wholehearted devotion. This involves not only following rules but nurturing an intimate connection through prayer, worship, and study of Scripture.

Summary

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (AMPC), presents a profound and clear choice to the Israelites: life and blessings through obedience to God, or death and curses through turning away from Him. Moses emphasizes the importance of loving God, walking in His ways, and staying devoted to Him as the path to true life. The passage warns against idolatry and underscores the generational impact of their choices. For believers today, this message is a timeless reminder of the freedom to choose between spiritual life or death, the blessings that come from obedience, and the significance of a devoted relationship with God as the source of life.
