The global movement to protect oceans is gaining speed, aiming to safeguard 30% of marine waters by 2030 through the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). A study confirmed that shark populations are thriving in these areas—a strong signal of a healthy ecosystem. I had a punchline here alluding to lawyers being sharks but honestly that felt a bit disrespectful to sharks.
These successful, highly protected areas create "spillover" effects, allowing fish populations to expand and support nearby fisheries. Countries such as Palau, Chile, and Colombia have already met the 30% target and are seeing tangible economic and ecological rewards. I’m sure water nerds understand how increasing the shark population also increases the fish population but I do not. Wait...was Jaws right? Do sharks only eat people? DO THEY EAT PEOPLE?
Good For You, Italy
Italy's parliament passed an historic law formally recognizing femicide as a distinct crime, imposing life sentences for gender-based murders. The law was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support. The government has already doubled funding for anti-violence centers and shelters, demonstrating a concrete commitment to taking action and raising awareness. Wow, this must have been really disappointing for members of 4Chan...or I guess “Il Quaddro-Chan-a” (I am so sorry for this joke).
The legislation includes tougher penalties for related crimes like stalking, strengthening protective measures. This reform sends a strong, clear message that misogynistic crimes will be met with the highest punishment. Ironically this last legislation was achieved when an activist broke into a legislator’s house and boiled their pet rabbit.
A (Reasonably) Bright Future
According to Bloomberg magazine, the world is quietly winning on climate by consistently exceeding key targets and defying widespread pessimism. Historical agreements, often labeled as failures, like the Kyoto Protocol, were actually a resounding success, delivering emissions cuts far deeper than promised. The reason you don’t know this because climate change has the same publicist as Taylor Swift.
This pattern continues today: the European Union has dramatically reduced its greenhouse pollution, and China is successfully overshooting its ambitious goals for installing wind and solar power. Time and again, what "sober realists" called impossible has been achieved, proving that environmental ambition works. In fact at this pace, by 2030 the leading emitter of gas will be that pretentious “Yeah, but...” pessimist who firmly believes the world is doomed based on one Instagram post they saw 8 years ago.
The global energy transition is now accelerating towards victory, fundamentally remaking our power systems with solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. The world is already generating 9% more renewable electricity than experts once thought was necessary to limit warming to 2 degrees Celsius. Crucially, the Paris Agreement is working, having reduced the end-of-century warming forecast from 3 degrees to 2.3 degrees Celsius—a significant step that brings the critical "well below 2 degrees" target ever closer to being within reach. If this pace continues, this will allow humanity to focus on bigger goals: like reaching other planets...so we can ruin them.
