The Potion

Simon had to admit that, at first, he was a bit wary of this medium-psychic-healer-magician. It wasn’t common for mediums to concoct medicines. He even thought they probably weren’t allowed to. It would likely fall under some law, like “unlawful practice of medicine” or something similar if clients ever filed a complaint. But after thinking it over, he figured she had nothing to gain by giving him a poison that could make him sick or send him to the other side for good. What would be the point for her? Nothing but trouble!

Besides, the recipe had come from the beyond, and that… that was incredibly thrilling! He remembered reading that the great American psychic, Edgar Cayce, had a gift for receiving remedy recipes like this. They were communicated to him under hypnosis and had helped heal and save many people. So Simon decided to trust her and, as agreed, return to pick up what she’d promised him.

There was still a risk, though. The recipe might have come from a lower astral entity—a demon, an evil spirit. Those spirits were extremely perverse and malicious. They couldn’t always interfere in the world of the living unless given an opportunity. Ouija boards provided that opportunity. Countless cases of possession had followed Ouija board sessions. People, often young folks looking for fun, would provoke spirits, invite them in. Without really believing it, just for kicks, they’d give spirits full permission to take over their bodies. The spirits didn’t hesitate. And the possessed often ended up in a psychiatric hospital.

Drinking the potion meant Simon was completely entrusting himself to the experience and moral judgment of someone he barely knew.

At 12:30, he pushed open the door to her office. A client was sitting in the waiting room. Simon greeted him politely, but the man gave him a blank, bovine stare before looking back down at his phone without responding. Simon sat down, a bit taken aback by the rude attitude. He was about to grab a magazine from the coffee table when the medium quietly entered, almost as if she didn’t want the man to notice her, and motioned for Simon to follow. She silently led him into her office. Once the door was closed, she spoke normally:

“Here it is. I prepared it last night, following the recipe from your… ahem… our contact. It’s a precise blend of plants and flowers. All perfectly common, don’t worry.”

“They’re diluted in a bit of alcohol—cognac—but there’s so little you won’t get drunk,” she said with a laugh. “I wrote the instructions on this paper. It’s simple: spray it three times under your tongue at bedtime. Be in bed, lying down—it can be intense.”

“Intense? That’s reassuring!” Simon said, a bit nervous. “What’s it supposed to do?”

“For starters, it’ll help you relax. I know you have trouble falling asleep and often wake up at night.”

“I’m guessing the entity you contacted told you all that about me. That’s impressive!”

“The main purpose of this blend,” she continued, “is to help you reach the Astral Plane. They’re waiting for you there. At least, that’s what I was told yesterday.”

“You mean I’m going to leave my body and take an astral trip? That trendy thing all the esoteric folks are obsessed with? These days, that’s all they talk about in those circles. But despite all the tips from ‘experts’ and the various methods out there, hardly anyone pulls it off.”

Simon couldn’t believe his ears. This little woman was telling him that the elusive astral journey was within his reach! He could’ve hugged her, overwhelmed with gratitude.

“Easy now, don’t get too excited. Astral travel is a bit complicated. Honestly, there are different kinds. I’m not entirely sure if you’ll leave your body, explore the Astral Plane through remote viewing, or just enter an altered state of consciousness. But I can tell you you’ll be connected to subtle dimensions in some way. And it’ll be brief! So try to figure out what’s expected of you up there—or out there,” she corrected herself. “Do your mission, because it’s been specifically requested of you.”

“Is there any risk in drinking this stuff? For me, I mean. Like, could I get stuck up there and not be able to come back to my body, or maybe not wake up at all?”

“No, the hard part is getting out. Coming back is a piece of cake. It’s actually the easiest part and often happens involuntarily. My advice: move away from your body quickly, because it acts like a powerful magnet. It might pull you back even if you don’t want it to. To return, just think of your body—it’s that simple. It’s often frustrating because when you’re up there, you usually want to stay as long as possible.”

She handed him a small vial, which he took carefully.

“Oh, I almost forgot—get yourself a clear quartz crystal, an amethyst, you know, the purple quartz. Place it on your nightstand, pointing toward your head, your pineal gland, to be exact. It can work without it, but it’s better with one. It’s a great amplifier for the potion. Feel free to reach out for more advice, and let me know how it goes!”

She walked him to the door and turned to the client in the waiting room, who was still tapping away at his phone. She kindly invited him to step into her office and wait. He stood up, nearly bumping into Simon without so much as a glance, and went to settle in her office. Simon hadn’t liked the guy earlier, and his behavior wasn’t helping.

At the door, Simon thanked her, paid for the consultation and the precious elixir, and decided to head straight to a crystal shop to buy the finest amethyst. On his way back to his small apartment, he replayed their conversation in his mind. In the end, he told himself the astral cord wasn’t likely to break, and he’d just make sure not to tangle it with another traveler’s.
