Welcome!

If you enjoy spotting butterflies, snoozing with your back against a knobbly tree or finding a stream to dip your feet in, you might like what I've got to offer.

My name is Rebecca and I’m an outdoor author and photographer who blends wildlife watching and mindful travel.

I’ve written two books, the first about Slow travel in North East Scotland and the second a collaborative project about low-carbon wildlife watching across the UK.

I write a monthly column in The Scots Magazine, encouraging people to explore this incredible country’s landscape and wildlife. My features merge nature and travel and have included temperate rainforests, stone circles, hare folklore and Edinburgh’s hidden green spaces.

So much of our time online is spent rapidly flicking from post to post. I was sick of the clickbait and algorithms so decided to launch my own Substack publication called Thoughtful In Nature. This space is dedicated to longer ponderings that don’t fit in a social media caption.

I hope to encourage people to savour small moments and explore the natural world slowly and more immersively. There are colourful photos, nuggets of wildlife trivia and plenty of self-deprecating humour. I like to write and share what I learn as if we’re just strolling along together and having a chat.

By the way, I never use AI to write my articles. Everything you read from me comes from my own meandering thoughts and ideas.

I publish a new post every Saturday morning about one of the following:

  • Insights into British birds, mammals and butterflies and how to identify them

  • Diary entries from outdoor travels around the UK, often including rock climbing, wild swimming and bobbing about in my inflatable canoe

  • Tips for slower, more nature-focussed wellbeing

It’s a joy to read your content - always informative but with your unique twist of quirky fun!

I love how your curiosity slows the whole world down until it becomes all about what’s happening in the grass at your feet. You had me looking up into oak trees and then kneeling beside knapweed with you.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this - you describe settings and nature so creatively and accurately all at once.

Thank you for your gentle encouragement and inspiration. Your words are like a walk in the woodlands by the sea! Bless you for your consistent message - nature soothes, uplifts and restores us.

Thank you for joining me! To read my weekly wildlife content, click here to visit my Substack.
