Life: Balance of Holding On and Letting Go

Feb 14, 2023

For two months now, I’ve been pondering on this quote: "Life is a balance of holding on and letting go". - Rumi

It makes me question myself about my life, my balance, what I’m holding on and what I’m letting go of.

In life, you hold on to people, memories, emotions, and dreams and also let go. The question is how do you know when to do one thing over the other? Does this situation or person add value to my life? Do I need this in my life?

To understand this quote, you must understand the importance, the significance, the reason why you should hold on to someone or something, and when you should let go of someone or something.

Balance means making choices and enjoying those choices. It is also about what you can and what you can’t control. Everything in life is about balance; it could be work, family, relationships, emotions, or situations. Keeping your balance is not always easy. The only thing you must be mindful of is not being stuck in a situation.

Holding on to hope where the future is known is good but holding on to hope where it’s unknown is the hardest thing to do and the most important. You have to figure out what gives you hope and believe in the hope. Faith and hope work together and one must understand their significance. One can’t live without the other.

Hold on to yourself and your values. Hold on to what makes you feel GOOD inside. Hold on to the people who show love and support no matter what. Hang out with people who are hoping for the best. Read books, blogs, and articles that inspire you to stay hopeful and faithful, that motivate you to hold on to hope.

One of the toughest things is to let go of what you can’t control. You must let go of your past. Learn from your mistakes and keep moving. It would be best if you let go of negative people, and unhealthy relationships that hold us back and embrace the positive influences in your life.

Like Thich Nhat Hanh said, Letting go gives us freedom and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If in our hearts, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.
