Heading into the week...

Some of the most important growing happens where we can’t see it.

As a gardener, I can water, tend and protect my plants, but I can’t see everything happening beneath the soil. Roots are spreading. Vegetables are forming. Nature is doing its work in its own time — and I may not know what the harvest looks like until I gently lift what’s been growing.

Supporting our dogs can feel much the same.

We can make thoughtful choices, offer safety, build trust and practise together, yet still have days when it feels as though nothing is changing. But progress can be growing quietly beneath the surface: a little more recovery time, a moment of curiosity, a choice to reconnect, or coping with something that once felt too difficult.

Learning takes time, and repeated experiences can help change the brain’s connections. The progress may not always be obvious while we’re living through it. Sometimes we’re simply too close to see how much our dog — and we — have grown.

So keep tending those roots. Trust the small steps. And remember to pause and notice the wonderful dog beside you: already a king or queen in their own right. 👑🐾
