Have you ever paused to think about the stories our homes tell? The books on our shelves, the toys in our kids' hands, the routines we hold onto—they all carry the weight of the narratives we’ve inherited. Often, those narratives come from a history of colonization, centering a single story while silencing so many others.
Decolonizing your home and parenting isn’t about throwing away everything you know. It’s about expanding, questioning, and intentionally creating a space where diverse voices, histories, and perspectives are honored.
Here are a few practical steps to start:
1. Diversify Your Bookshelf:
Take a close look at the books in your home. Do they reflect a wide range of cultures, authors, and characters? Add titles that center Indigenous voices, Black authors, and stories from around the world.
2. Reimagine Play:
Evaluate the toys and games your kids use. Are they reinforcing stereotypes or encouraging open-ended exploration and empathy? Introduce dolls, action figures, and games that represent different skin tones, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
3. Challenge Traditional Narratives:
Start conversations about the holidays you celebrate, the history you teach, and the media you consume as a family. Whose stories are missing? Begin to include the perspectives of those often left out, and approach new learning moments with curiosity and openness.
4. Lead with Curiosity:
It’s okay not to have all the answers. When your child asks a tough question, use it as an opportunity to learn together. Model the power of curiosity and research—it teaches your kids that unlearning is a lifelong process.
